Activision Says Black Ops 3 is Selling Better Than Advanced Warfare or Ghosts
Activision was proud to announce today that so far, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is their best-selling title in the history of COD, bringing in $550 million after being out for less than a week.
The thing about Activision’s figure is that it’s difficult to determine what they’re counting as a sold game. Black Ops 3 is being sold in several versions including a $200 version that comes with a minifridge. It’s also inside a $430 Playstation 4 bundle. If I was this company’s promotion department I would be counting as much as possible.
Not only is the game selling well, it’s being played a lot. According to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, the “engagement per player” — meaning the amount of time being racked up by the average gamer playing BO3 — is currently the highest in the history of the Call of Duty franchise. When you put all the “engagement per player” figures together, it adds up to over 75 million hours of COD from last weekend alone.
Last year’s COD release, Advanced Warfare, was also the top-selling game in the US and the year before that, Call of Duty: Ghosts was the #1 game in both the US and Europe.
