Borderlands Movie Greenlit For Production
The Hollywood Reporter has broken the story that Lionsgate Films will partner with Gearbox Software to produce a feature film based on the Borderlands series of games.
Borderlands, as you probably know, is a comedic first-person shooter series set on the wild planet of Pandora, where survival means digging up resources and fighting over control of them. Avi Arad, former chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment and producer of X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and The Amazing Spider-Man, will be overseeing production of the movie.
“We believe that we’ve brought together the right partners, the ideal creative team and the perfect property to launch a new motion picture tentpole for a global audience,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger (at the same time?)
Naturally, just because a Borderlands movie has been greenlit doesn’t mean it’ll make it all the way to a big screen near you. For every video game movie that’s made it to completion, there are hundreds of others that were cancelled or overdeveloped into oblivion. There are also many that should’ve been cancelled before they were released, but weren’t.
Just know that, for the time being, someone has the OK to make a Borderlands movie. Time will tell whether we actually see it.
