Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Uses Avatar 2 Facial Animation Tools
Okay, first, I didn’t know there was going to be an Avatar 2. I thought the first one wrapped up pretty nicely. Those little Smurf guys won, right? Anyway, though, there is a sequel set for 2016, and Sledgehammer Games’ Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is using the same systems.
According to a preview for an upcoming article in Edge magazine, the new game will use facial animation techniques “powered by technology and techniques that will also be used in the production of James Cameron’s Avatar 2.”
The teaser article also says that Advanced Warfare aims for, and achieves “photorealism” in places, which sounds like a lofty goal considering the power of the consoles it’s going to run on. The snippets we have seen so far look pretty good, however. The main question will be whether all of that rendering tech will be put toward creating people and situations worth caring about.
Advanced Warfare is coming November 4 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC.
