Daryl’s face when Rick and the bridge blew up crushed me. You could sense the pain and guilt and sorrow in his face :(

How about instead of self imposed isolation, Daryl was exiled?

What if Maggie and Daryl's plan to kill Negan, but which inadvertently led to Rick's "death", unites all the feuding communities and they decide to exile Maggie and Daryl?

A grieving Michonne would vote them out.
Ezekiel believes in Rick's plan of unity and would vote them out.
Jesus will likely claim he was spying for Rick the whole time and vote them out. Jesus will also be appointed Hilltop's new leader.
Carol will plead Daryl and Maggie's case, but the Alliance's leaders have voted.

Maggie is forced to leave Hershel Jr. with Aaron (sort of like how Clementine was forced to leave her community without AJ in Telltale's TWD S3 game).

Carol leads the escort group to the Kingdom's border and says a tearful goodbye to Daryl. Daryl asks her to go with them, but Carol says Henry needs a family.

Daryl and Maggie do their best to survive in a wilderness where Saviors aren't killing walkers anymore (Negan was right). Eventually, Daryl fails to protect Maggie and she's bitten. Maggie resigns herself to her fate and tells Daryl to "Just survive somehow". Daryl walks down the road and hears a single gunshot. Daryl bursts out into tears (EMO Daryl).

Five years later and Daryl leads a nomadic existence. He occasionally comes across survivors and leads them to the borders of the Alliance's communities but he refuses to lead them any further. Daryl Dixon has become a folk hero amongst many people in the communities as a selfless loner who saved them and led them to safety.

As for the Alliance's leadership, Michonne now sees that Daryl and Maggie weren't to blame for Rick's death and regrets pressing the other leaders to exile them. Jesus regrets not having told Rick about Daryl and Maggie's plan far sooner. As for Carol and Ezekiel, they got married, but the marriage quickly went cold. The only thing keeping them together is Henry, and he's getting older.

When new survivors enter the communites, Michonne, Jesus, and Carol send out riders to bring back Daryl, but they always return empty handed. Carol herself rides out and spends weeks trying to find him, but to no avail.

The Whisperers arrive. Several people from the Alliance are kidnapped, and their severed heads are found in a field on pikes. Ezekiel is among them.

With the war going on Carol continues her search for Daryl, but runs across a group of Whisperer scouts instead. The Whisperers are about to kill Carol when Daryl suddenly appears and rescues her.

Daryl tells Carol about Maggie getting bit five years ago. Carol apologizes for Maggie's death, for Daryl's exile, and for her marriage to Ezekiel. She asks Daryl to return to the Kingdom and help her and the Alliance fight the Whisperers, and he agrees.

In the S9 finale, the Whisperers are defeated, and Caryl finally goes official.

Ummm, no. Everyone knows stuff and thangs happen. There is no safety, no matter what you have done or will do. You just have to move on as best you can. And Maggie would never be parted from Hershel.

That sounds like an amazing fanfiction, though.

Thank you. I'm currently rewriting my previous TWD fanfiction and reposting it on FF.NET.

I LOVE apocalyptic shows. Showing how people survive. I love it. I like the horror aspect of TWD, but it is the story of the people that I like. It wouldn't be very interesting if it was just walker killing for an hour.

Agreed! It’s a different type of angle on it and has some non-fiction aspects to it but the Hatfields and McCoys series i thought was great because of the survival of the fittest type of thing that was going on and the two sides battling for dominance, etc. it was apocalyptic but it was obviously set way back

Indeed. But I'd rather Daryl and Maggie were exiled by the friends they were trying to protect instead of just disappearing for 5 years.

Also in this scenario, Maggie gets bit and commits suicide, we now have the debate whether Michonne, Jesus, and Ezekiel are responsible for her death.

Then Daryl, who since S6 has been the EMO idiot, fails to protect Maggie, but in the end, winds up helping the Alliance defeat the Saviors, and finally be with Carol.

I'm not feeling that exiled idea. I mean it's a cool thought and I always dig someone thinking outside the box. I just don't see how that would work given the future of the show. At some point they are all back together, at least Daryl is. So the idea that they would exile him only to have to accept him again seems like it would be bad storytelling. It really doesn't fit with the way the story has gone over the years.

Sure we can point to Daryl when it comes to Glenn, but obviously nobody else blamed him. Rick getting hurt and sacrificing himself being the reason they exile him? I just don't see it.

I appreciate the feedback, @Sebrebc. But the idea with this scenario, tempers have died down and everyone now regrets the decision to exile Daryl and Maggie. The news that Maggie died out in the wilderness will make that regret worse.

Plus when the Whisperers appear, they inflict a heavy toll on the Alliance. They need a tracker and a fighter. Daryl will be a big help to them.

As I said earlier, I like the irony of Daryl and Maggie conspiring to protect the fragile Alliance from Negan, but their actions end up getting Rick "killed". The Alliance united against them, and exiled them out to the wilderness.

Of course I agree with this.

As much as I like Daryl he is always hurting the group even though he feels he's helping them.

His interference got Glenn killed and his interference nearly got Rick killed.

I said this at the time but Daryl didn't get Glenn killed - Negan did. No one else is responsible for Negan's actions.

    That's crap.

Negan clearly said (paraphrasing) "the first one is free but I will shut that shit down if it happens again...no exceptions". And what does Daryl do after Negan taunts Rosita AFTER killing Abraham? Jumps up and punches him as if that were gonna make the situation better for them with Daryl's thought process being "Hey, he just killed Abraham so I'll hit Negan and he'll kill me but at least the others will see we shouldn't bow down to anyone and will use my silly sacrifice as motivation to stand up to Negan's group and win"??? What did he think would happen?

Fast forward to last wk's episode with his thought process being "I'll take Rick away from Alexandria so Maggie can kill Negan and though he'll be pissed and probably fight back because it's in Rick's DNA to stand up for what he believes, we'll be cool afterwards and things'll get back to normal".... Really?

So he would rather fight Rick instead of trusting that Rick and Maggie could come to a resolution similar to Maggie and Michonne. Speaking of which all of that was for naught since Maggie decided to let Negan live anyway!
