One very important thing to note though is that these were people who had covid bad enough to be admitted to the hospital for it, not just people diagnosed with it in general. If 12% of people diagnosed with covid were later dying that would be a LOT of deaths.

I'm not trying to minimize things here, but reading that headline scared the heck out of me.

    "
Researchers at the UK’s Leicester University and the Office for National Statistics found that out of 47,780 people discharged from the hospital, 29.4 percent were readmitted within 140 days, the Telegraph reported.

Of the total, 12.3 percent ended up dying, it added."

These deaths are part of the excess deaths this year. Probably not being counted in virus deaths.

    Here's something. Biden said:

""If we fail to act, there will be a wave of evictions and foreclosures in the coming months as this pandemic rages on because there’s nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic in the next several months," Biden said."

So... remember how Trump not doing something one day resulted in all these horrible outcomes, etc.? Well Biden's new line is "I'm not responsible and the government's not responsible, it is what it is". The unstated part is, of course, "you're on your own". All these shutdowns, etc.? What was the point if "there's nothing we can do"? Does that mean states can open up fully again?

Staying open when others shut down is good for your economy:

    "
South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem touted her state’s low unemployment rate in a Friday afternoon tweet, noting it’s pre-pandemic standing as she refused to close businesses despite spiking coronavirus cases.

"South Dakota's unemployment rate dropped to 3.0% in December," the Republican governor wrote. "That's lower than it was BEFORE the pandemic."

Noem, an avid Trump supporter, made headlines last spring when she refused to enforce stay-at-home orders in the Mount Rushmore State, telling reporters during an April press briefing that "South Dakota is not New York City."

Ummm... but the problem with your analogy (which is surprisingly good for a change, lol) is that his statements indicate that he's not even going to bother with trying to get people onto life boats. Period.

And you're okay with making excuse for that? Come on, man!

Thanks. He’s not suggesting he doesn’t care about flattening the curve but its already Mt Everest. It can ONLY go down from here. He cant stop it from spreading. Its prevalent in every state. He is trying to get vaccinations on track but he was denied information for months. So now of course he is bring criticized for not having a well formed plan.

That's a VERY bad analogy! The Titanic hitting an iceberg was a solitary event, and once it was done, it was done. No fixing it was possible.

Covid, however, is an ONGOING situation with new spread of disease happening every day. It's true you can't stop yesterday's new infections, but you CAN try and stop today's and tomorrow's. It's entirely different, and with good management we ARE able to decrease the number of deaths from the disease.

Biden's throwing up his hands and quitting on his second day in office? What a failure of a president. The people who put him in office should be ashamed of themselves.

We aren't at the top of a mountain as far as infection goes, we aren't even close. The trouble with infections is that if even one contagious person gets near naive people the infection can start all over again.

Who said we can't stop it from spreading? What do you think the point of social distancing, wearing masks, etc. is? To try and stop it from spreading.

And no one is criticizing him for not having a plan, he's being criticized for *giving up*! No one, ever, has one by quitting before they even try.

Again he hasn’t quit. He simply said he cant flatten a curve thats already peaked. It can spread person to person but its already in embedded every state. Social distancing, as you so aptly pointed out, is only as effective as how few knuckleheads you have refusing to comply. The vaccination is the only real solution and its already going as fast as it can. All he can do is try to manage it the best he can given the late start the petty trump administration FORCED upon him. They just announced several plans for increasing the productivity. One allows one extra dose to be taken from each vile and another is a graduated syringes that allows doses to be taken out in exact amounts so that only what is needed can be drawn from the viles. Two strategies in the first two days hardly indicates that he’s given up.

When Government sycophants manage a pandemic:

    https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/24/birx-trump-parallel-covid-data-461928

“I saw the president presenting graphs that I never made,” Birx said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “So, I know that someone — or someone out there or someone inside was creating a parallel set of data and graphics that were shown to the president.”

Birx said that she didn’t know at the time who exactly was bringing the parallel data to the president, but that looking back, she now believed that Scott Atlas had provided some of the data. Atlas, a physician with no previous experience fighting infectious disease who became Trump’s former coronavirus adviser, contradicted scientists on mitigation efforts, including the wearing of masks and practicing social distancing.

    Merck's vaccine didn't pan out.

    "
Drugmaker Merck & Co on Monday said it will end development of its two COVID-19 vaccines, and will focus pandemic research on treatments, with initial efficacy data on an experimental oral antiviral expected by the end of March.

Merck said in a statement it will record a pretax discontinuation charge in the fourth quarter for vaccine candidate V591, which it acquired with the purchase of Austrian vaccine maker Themis Bioscience, and V590, developed with nonprofit research organization IAVI.

In early trials, both vaccines generated immune responses that were inferior to those seen in people who had recovered from COVID-19 as well as those reported for other COVID-19 vaccines, the company said."

"Within a day of being sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, Joe Biden signed executive orders mandating mask-wearing on federal property, at airports, and on planes, buses, and trains as part of his plan to combat the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 400,000 people in the US."

Wow, what a powerful order. Well, considering you *already* have to wear a mask on planes, in airports, etc.

On the Defense Production Act, what do you expect that to change? The pharmaceutical companies are already producing as much as they can as fast as they can.
