You've opened my eyes! The roads bit really convinced me. Why do they make roads black? Obviously so white people can step on them reinforcing their dominance in society. It really is all racism in the end, isn't it?

Bernie is a commie and he's an idiot. I've been trying to tell this to everyone for about 5 years now, but no one listens. At least you seem to get it on some level.

Actually, the whole "Roads are racist" allegation is a legit topic that people have discussed. It stems from back when our interstate highway system was being built. Many of the routes went through low income urban neighborhoods that were predominantly occupied by people of color. Their homes were wiped out to make room for freeways and people had to relocate.

I don't necessarily 100% agree that it was "racist" but it definitely was an issue where government decided to screw over a group of people in a lower class simply because they could get away with it.

I've always hated Bernie. I would never vote for Bernie for any reason. He's on the same level as Trump to me. I've never claimed anything different when it comes to him. Bernie's not even a real commie, he's a rich man pretending he believes in communism except when it comes to his own stuff, which he wants to keep.

He's an idiot, on that we agree.

That's not racist, that's just the poor getting the shaft like always. If you can show me where they avoided going through a poor white neighborhood to level a rich black neighborhood, I'd agree that was unquestionably racism.

From another perspective, it actually makes financial sense for the city to level the houses of the poorest people possible when they need to build a stadium or whatever. The State does have to compensate people for the land, structures, etc. so the less value there is in the properties they have to buy, the less the taxpayer is on the hook for. If they DID decide to level downtown L.A. or Bel Air to make a freeway the costs would be much higher.

That's not what he said. He said when he was growing up the norm was one person, usually the man, working 40 hours and that was enough income to raise a family, but now it takes two people and families are under a lot more stress. He is saying life is harder. Which it is. At no point does he blame women. He says that the current economy forces women to also have to work (acknowledging that some women chose to work and do not face the financial need to do so).

Did you actually listen to it, or are you going by the comments? Because that would be very misleading.

He does not espouse communism. Socialism. They're different. I know you hate him. I know you always will, and I don't bear any ill will about that. But hatred is no reason to get the facts wrong.

But what is the political heavy-hitter (who has consistently espoused democratic-socialist policies) actually worth? And how did he accumulate his cash?

What is Bernie Sanders' Net Worth?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, as of 2017, Sanders is worth an estimated $2 million. Compared to the current president (who boasts a net worth of an astounding $3.10 billion), it's a bit meager. Still, the ultra-famous proponent of democratic socialism has had a pretty long career, spanning several different occupations. So how did Sanders make his millions?

    Bernie Sanders' Salary

According to reports, Sanders made $1 million in 2016 -- $795,000 of which allegedly came from a book advance. Although the politician's salary from the Senate is rather modest compared to his other career endeavors (allegedly around $174,000 in 2016), his other investments and holdings bring his net worth up to the $2 million mark for last year.

But how did Sanders build his name?

    Bernie Sanders' Career

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Sanders was born to two Polish immigrants in the 1940s. But Sanders first hit the political scene as mayor of Burlington, Vermont in the early 1980s, where he served from 1981 to 1989 -- a total of four terms. After his time serving in Burlington, Sanders set his sights a little higher and aimed for House of Representatives -- which he was able to secure, taking a seat in the House in 1991.

After serving in the House until 2007, Sanders was elected Senator of Vermont that year, and has held that position ever since. The senator also took on the role of Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs in 2013, passing legislation aimed at improving VA health care in 2014. Sanders also reportedly serves on the Environment and Public Works Committee, the Committee on Budget, and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

The senator has long been known for his outspoken views on the middle class, the wealthy top 1%, and war.

Sanders has also long been a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, which he's defined for himself in the past.

"I think [democratic socialism] means the government has got to play a very important role in making sure that as a right of citizenship, all of our people have health care; that as a right, all of our kids -- regardless of income -- have quality childcare; are able to go to college without going deeply into debt; that it means we do not allow large corporations and moneyed interests to destroy our environment; that we create a government in which it is not dominated by big-money interest," Sanders has said. "I mean, to me, it means democracy, frankly. That's all it means."

For comparison's sake, remember when Hillary was down to a couple of million? She boo hooed she was BANKRUPT. Ugh. I despise her. But she would have been a very capable president and I didn't mind voting for her.

Actually I don't know exactly what the Clintons were down to, but if you have even one million dollars at your disposal in addition to the wealth tied up in real estate, you are not even idiomatically bankrupt.

I love you guys, too. lol

Bernie already changed the Democratic party. If the party goes no further left, I'm still happy and proud of Bernie's efforts on behalf of the 99%. :)

Could be running as a foil to Kaisich. Trump vs Kaisich head on might spell trouble for Trump. Kasich and 5 other republicans split the primary vote and leave Trump in place.

Sanders definitely changed the Dem party. His chance to be President passed last time, foiled by Hillary's control of the DNC. The ball has passed to someone else at this point.

BERNIE SANDERS IS NOT A DEMOCRAT. He never has been. He just wants their money and infrastructure. He's not really even all that progressive, he has voted against progressive bills as often as for them. If he runs, he has to run as an independent because he is NOT A DEMOCRAT, and the rules have been changed so that if you want to run as a Democrat, you actually have to be one.

So now Amazon has moved on and NY will not be giving them a 3 billion dollar tax break, I wonder what the people who are happy about this feel the 3 billion should be spent on instead?

They won't be spending that 3 billion on *anything*. Why? Because it doesn't exist. The 3 billion was going to be taxes on income that Amazon made that they didn't have to pay. The State of NY wasn't going to be giving them that money from funds they already have. That's kind of my point of this thing. If NY would have made the deal they'd be getting 250 million per year in income taxes from Amazon's employees, and after Amazon's tax break was done they'd be collecting however many millions or billions from them as well, not to mention all the taxes from businesses and employees that pop up to service these 25,000 well-paid management types, and it wouldn't really *cost* them anything. Now they get nothing - unless you count satisfaction in to the equation. I'm sure many people feel smug about the deal's collapse. I just don't understand why.

Surely this can't be. All I heard from opponents was how NY state should not be paying for a corporation. You mean they won't have this 3 billion dollars available now? Here I thought they dodged a bullet.
