That's kind of a weird Britishism, "gone mad". C.S. Lewis used "gone cracked" in one of his books, and I've seen "gone starkers" for being naked as well.

She became mad, she is mad, she's gone mad. They all imply insanity, but the "gone mad" one seems to imply that one is actually moving from one place to another, like one's essence leaves the "sane" platform and takes the train to the "nutjob" one. Kind of interesting.
