Carl’s actions this season were the natural progression of his character. There are many examples of this.

S2: Telling Shane they had to stay because they were gonna find Sophia.

S3: Being 1st to rescue Michone at the prison, when Rick hesitated.

S3: Rescuing Tyreese ‘s group from the tombs.

S4: Rushing to rescue the stranger on the last episode when Rick stops him.

S5: 1st to insist on saving Gabriel, insisting to Rick later at the church that not everyone can be bad, and that they’re strong enough to still help people.

S5: Telling Rick they need to stay in Alexandria and the people there need them.

 

True. But it is in line with his characterization throughout the television series.
