I know I love open world games, and there are open world first person shooter games, but I've never really seen anyone show any interest in an open world call of duty single player. Right now, people really don't care too much for the single player, but everyone loves open world games because you just don't have to play the parts you don't want to.

I've always had this silly theory that CoD games could have their maps run into each other to give it a sense of a full world (taking away the geographic locations for each map of course). Kind of like how you can see Hijacked from Cove - it would be so easy to run the rest of them together just as a backdrop. And maybe you could even see explosions in the background from a "battle" happening over there. Especially with maps like Nuketown, you could have - say, next door to Raid. Slums next to Standoff. Maybe see Meltdown behind Turbine. Express would be a super easy way to connect two and maybe be able to ride the train. Plaza and Carrier are surrounded by water so they could also be around Cove and Hijacked (and to really piece those together, have Carrier and Hijacked move, so you can disembark at Cove and Plaza!). I think if you got a little creative, you could piece them all together like a puzzle. Not necessarily in a straight line, but to the sides too.

Then going off of your question about open world, it would be fun to have a game mode that opened them ALL, side by side, and it's one giant battle (free-for-all) in an open world. Come and go into the game as you please. They could even mix it up when DLCs are released and take away the original order and put DLC maps in the middle, which would change up people's routes between "maps" and everything.

I think on singleplayer it can work. Especially if they made some challenges and gave multiplayer items from that singleplayer. Like Camo's, Uniforms , and maybe guns. They may even tie it up with the CO-OP. That may get people to play the singleplayer more often.

It would definitely get me more interested in the game, and I've been moving away from CoD recently (and I'm sure a lot of other people have been)

To be fair though, what usually happens with these things is that if people want it and CoD won't make it, someone else will make it and it'll be awesome. Then, if people liked it, CoD or another big studio might copy it.

An open world CoD game? I think the idea has potential, especially as a co-op experience.

There could a number of fireteams with different specialities that need to work together to achieve the same objective, for example, extract a dictator from his well defended fortress. Your 4 man fireteam gets dropped off in a random area, with other fireteams in different areas. Gunfire is coming from everywhere thick and fast and it prevents you from running wherever you want, but if another fireteam outflanks the enemy pinning your fireteam down, or completes a secondary objective that distracts those enemies, the pressure on your fireteam is reduced and you can start advancing. One fireteam might run into a tank and have to hold out until the special demolition fireteam can reach your position and take out the tank. But for that to happen, a third fireteam has to remove the blockades on a bridge which is the only access route to a safe vantage point for the demo team to do their job. Of course the bridge would rigged to blow so the stealth fireteam has to find the trigger man and take him out, before the demo team can even think about making a move on the bridge. While all this is happening, another fireteam with a completely different objective could be wandering through the warzone and decide to lend a hand before continuing with their own mission.

While each team is pinned down, they would still need to defend themselves and could assist the other teams by eliminating any enemies they can see, calling out enemy positions, etc. It would be like a the kind of action scenes you often see in war movies, but the players are making it happen and you wouldn't be able to complete you objective, unless you all pulled together and communicated properly.

With the success of Destiny's shared world public events, I think something like this could be the next big thing in co-op gaming. It sounds possible at the very least...

Everyone is mentioning co-op here ._. I meant for single player (although I can see potential for both).

Well, I believe, a open shooter game will only work if the environments provided for such a game provides a great gameplay. For example, maybe they can make a COD time-travel game, which you helm a character through various battles in large open maps from previous COD games. Or it can be a COD game similar to Fallout franchise, but a similar gameplay as the former.

Truly, any shooter game can be made into a open-world game.

Possibly, but they'd have to do it right. It probably could not be open world like we think of, like GTA, but they could do something like Battlefield.

I was thinking open world like skyrim or fallout, or even far cry. They're all open world games and they're all generally considered to be really good games :)

The more I think about it, I'm not sure an open world campaign would work with CoD games. There's always a sense of urgency in CoD campaign missions, which makes playing them so thrilling. It wouldn't feel the same if you had to stop the bad guy from getting away, but you decide to wander off to look for items, or complete a secondary objective or something.

An open world co-op mode would work a lot better...

I'm going to relate this to skyrim a lot, just because I'm playing it way too much recently. I think if the open world game was done in the way that skyrim is done, then it could work quite well.

In skyrim, there's not a lot of chasing people around, but there are sealed off areas, so when chasing people around, they're stuck in this much smaller section of the map. It's not that the characters can't escape, but they're programmed not to walk through the doors.

Obviously the gameplay in Skyrim has been created specifically for an open world game. CoD has always been a very linear game, created with intense cinematic action sequences, which makes them exciting to play through. If players have the freedom to ignore the mission objective while they do other things, the game wouldn't feel like CoD anymore. Restrictions would have to be put in place to prevent you from going off mission to maintain the excitement of the story, which kind of defeats the purpose of having an open world in the first place.

I'm not saying an open world CoD game wouldn't be possible, but I think it would feel like a completely different game, so you may as well start a brand new IP...

Maybe it should feel completely different. People are starting to care less and less about the game over time, and while they could leave the multiplayer the same, this could be something really good for the single player.

If you make it feel completely different, you run the risk of alienating your fan base and jeopardising sales of future games and content. Changes need to be implemented gradually, so it's easier for people to adjust to them.

CoD fans don't have a problem with the single player campaign. They only seem to have a problem with the MP mode. That's what most people want to see changed...

I mean, does the single player mode work as it is right now? I feel like people tend to ignore it and only ever play the multiplayer
