Cool. Maybe they don't run into trouble before Hilltop. They probably do but maybe. Earl Sutton!

"A journey begins." I wonder if this will be a figurative journey or a literal one?

Two issues is enough time for them to get into and out of a little trouble. Remember when they got Morgan?

True. I was predicting it to be more than a little trouble if it's that herd lol.

Agreed. In the short span of issues #57-#60 Rick, Abe and Carl encounter the bandits, Rick kills the bandits, they make it back to Cynthiana and rescue Morgan, and then they manage to survive the mega-herd and subsequent head-on collision; and succeed in out-running the herd, and packing up the entire camp and hitting the road. All this is accomplished before the encounter Gabriel. So there is definitely ample enough time for them to wind up in the thick of it and then Grimes their way up out of their.

My current spitball theory, is that Rick and Carl head out for Hilltop. While they're en route, they encounter the herd that the two young cowboys from the Hilltop foolishly roused out of hibernation. The two young guys encounter more trouble trying to return to the Hilltop and wind up losing the one horse they still had. With one of the boy's leg broken the two are rendered immobile and decide it's best to hide and wait the herd out, allowing them to pass. Rick and Carl encounter the herd, and since the Grimes family is the stuff of zombie apocalypse legend; Rick and Carl quickly and efficiently develop a plan on the fly to dispatch/circumvent the herd.(This would explain the cover of #129 and it's tagline "Even now, they still find new ways to dispose of the dead."). Most likely some sort of pitfall trap. After making short work of the herd that hindered their progress; Rick and Carl continue on their trek to the Hilltop. As they travel, they unknowingly pass the hiding spot of the two young horse riders. Not being familiar the the Grimes men, and not expecting to encounter living souls out in the deadlands, the two boys choose to continue hiding, keeping their presence unknown; as they assume the voices they hear are those of men who are most likely bandits.(This serves to explain issue #130's cover and tagline--"I heard voices and I was afraid.")

Jwcombs basically said what I was thinking.

Although, my spitball is that Rick and Carl "think" they evade the herd, but accidentally lead it to the hilltop. Thus, Rick ends up at the hilltop for longer than he had intended, giving negan extra time to make bad shit happen while he's away.

Awesome cover. Reminds me of old TWD covers before #100.

Carl will finally learn how to be a blacksmith in Hilltop, but wonder what will happen with Rick... He'll have to come back to Alexandria sooner or later, but leaving Carl in Hilltop is a bit harder decision for him...
