I think you're seeing this through the eyes of a superfan who wants to see Daryl succeed. To me, he's just a flawed character. I don't hate him but i think he's in a stage right now (just like I thought about Rosita last season) that he's reckless and letting his emotions take over. It's called adding dimension to him instead of making him invincible with always the right decisions. If Daryl didn't grow & change as a character, i would complain more if I were you.

 

I supported the decision to put Daryl in the background during season 4, and I understand mistakes are a part of character development, BUT, Daryl is smarter than Gimple gives him credit for. Daryl from seasons 1-4 would never have walked into Dwight's trap, especially to avenge a woman he BARELY knew. Daryl has never questioned Rick, but SUDDENLY he refuses to follow Rick's lead and attacks Sanctuary single-handedly. Just more of Gimple's formula of smart characters doing stupid things to move the plot forward.

With Carl's tragic and unnecessary death in the S8 MSF, the rumor amongst the dwindling fanbase is that Daryl will get Carl's comic book storyline. That doesn't surprise me, because Gimple writes Daryl with the maturity of a twelve-year-old.

 

No, Gimple will do the same thing he did with Andrea and spread Carl's storyline among different characters. Probably, Carol will get the relationship with Lydia (not in a romantic way, but as some kind of Sophia 2.0) and Gimple seems to be setting things to give Gabriel some kind of interaction with Negan. Maybe that part of Carl's storyline goes to Gabriel or Rick. Of course, there's always the hope that amc fire Gimple and a new showrunner just decide to not follow the comics and to do his/her own story.

But in any case, Carl's full storyline won't go to Daryl, it will be spread among different characters.

This was a pretty compelling critique of TWD's right-hand-man problem caused by Daryl.

I'm neutral towards Daryl now and really think Norman Reedus is a cool dude, but I really hope Angela Kang addresses this issue. For Jesus' sake.

 

AMC is currently running a TWD marathon called "The Best of the Dixon Brothers", so its obvious these are episodes from S1-5.
