    People do frequently call them "bolts" but technically, they are as much arrows as what you would shoot out of a longbow. The term bolt comes from the earlier medieval crossbows and looks something like this:

    Bolts are short, heavy, solid wood shaft with normally only two feathers, and a very large, heavy tip. Modern crossbows do not use these anymore, as carbon-fiber or aluminum arrows shoot farther, are lighter, and with the right broadhead, can still do loads of damage.

    But I've seen the term bolt and arrow used interchangeably, even by crossbow enthusiasts, so it's a minor point.
