As one of the world's largest entertainment companies, Disney has invested $1.5 billion into game developer Epic Games, and the investment will focus on Fortnite, Epic Games' well-known battle royale title. The deal has two major components. The first is a partnership in which Disney IPs and characters will be featured in an all-new games and entertainment universe. The second is Disney becoming a shareholder in Epic Games. Disney's newly announced 'universe' will be connected to Fortnite, likely leveraging Fortnite's built-in map creation tools and world-building capabilities to create Disney-themed metaverse-like experiences. In the past, esports stakeholders have taken advantage of Fortnite's world-building capabilities. One example is Complexity’s partner GameSquare's collaboration with Mastercard. The South Korean esports organization Gen.G and Crocs also engaged in a similar activation in 2017.
