Earthquake yesterday scared the crap out of me.I thought someone set a bomb off. My place was shaking and huge rumbling noise. I only experienced one before which happened at night and woke me up so I missed most of it. This time I was awake and sitting at my computer (what else).

I was confused at the time it was happening because I didnt realize earthquakes could make a loud booming noise. It was loud but had a low or deep tone to it.

Delaware!!! OMG! As a fan of earthquakes, I'm kind of jealous that you got such a special one. I think you must have been very close.

Yes. I have seen conflicting numbers so I dont know what they will finally decide the rating was.

U.S. Geological Service is the gold standard, so 4.1 should hold. The number doesn't tell everything, though. How close you are, how close the quake is to the surface, what type of soil you are on--they all make a difference. The map looks so quiet for the U.S. yesterday. I'm really astonished you got the quake.

Are you feeling aftershocks? After Loma Prieta I felt queasy for a while because of the little ones I wasn't aware of, but they were enough to set my inner ear off.

I bet that had to do with the low rumble you heard. Probably your entire body was vibrating to deep tones.

Makes sense . I hadnt thought of that.
A funny aside. It relates to earthquake so bear with me. I have taken care of a feral cat for about 6 years. She has gradually grown to love me to death but afraid of every else. She will not come in house but scratches at my window for me to feed her or just to come out and sit on steps with her. She hates when trucks that vibrate with noise (UPS, Garbage truck , school bus) start coming down road and will take off running to hide. During day she sleeps a little ways from my house in between huge rocks along hill near a creek. [I have bought her insulated cat house that she will sometimes sleep in winter] Anyway after the earthquake it wasn't long at all that she was scratching at my window of my computer room, wanting me to come out to sit with her: Was she checking to see if I was alright or wanting comfort because she was frightened? I dont know but it wasnt her usual time of day to come around. Perhaps coincidence.

Awww, what a sweet story. I think she did want your comforting presence.

There is a scientist in California who used the Gone Gatto (missing cats reports) as data for predicting earthquakes. The smaller you are, the more alarming those body rumbling sensations are. This was back in the days of newspapers. I don't know if he still tracks missing pets as a precursor warning.

Are you saying the cats are frightened and run away from home?

[ a side note so no one gets upset about female feral cat: I did get the cat fixed and rabies shots. A nonprofit loaned me a cagetrap]

Yes, supposedly they run away before earthquakes more often than at other times. So to come to you directly afterwards, I think your cat is exceptionally loving of you.

Hugs to you for fixing the cat and taking such good care!! <3

I'm a huge cat lover, and I think it's awesome what you're doing for this kitty :) When a cat is born and raised outdoors that's all they know, like any other animal that lives outside.
