Wow, did Hershel sober up quick or what? I really liked that he wasn't pointless when the fighting broke out. Tossed Glenn the shotgun asap. I also found it funny when Rick was all; you sure could have used the practice, Hershel was all; I know how to shoot all nonchalant like. Not to mention putting Shane in his place.

Yeah putting Shane in his place was the icing on the cake.

I'm telling ya, Hershel needs a bodyguard detail. He has the most valuable skill set there is right now. Medical training, firearms training, animal husbandry, farming, mechanical skills as well and lord knows what else.

Agree, he and Rick could be the core of a strong tribe. And he handles his liquor well.

I am beginning to hope that Hershel does not get killed off and him and Maggie leave the farm with Rick and co.

I have little doubts that at this point in time, he would hesitate to blow some one like Shane away if they proved to endanger his family.

Zambi- why would Herschel blow Shane away when he couldn't just put a bullet in the boy on the fence? A screaming man, impaled on a fence with scores of zombies moving in and Herschel steps back with Rick to discuss if maybe putting the man down might not be for the best.

If he was the man you're making him out to be he would have made an executive decision- as Rick just did in the bar- and put one in the man, gave Rick a look that told him the moral dilemma he seemed to be struggling with was over, and got in the car.

But the man who you think wouldn't do anything to endanger his family just let Rick gamble with his life (Rick ran away from him and Glenn to tend to the man on the fence and then basically forced them to stay while they begged to leave) and therefore the lives of his family.

Herschel wised up but he better get a lot smarter- Rick WILL get a person killed.

Rick is a good man. And in more than just in a gun fight. Besides they could have easily cut him off of that fence. That was stupid.

Being "good" will get one killed in the ZA.

Glenn is holding zombies off- well actually just shooting as there's no "holding them off"- on the car side with a shotgun. While they'd be cutting away the leg he has to reload (does he even know how to?) and by that time the zombies are past the car. Rick is holding off zombies on his side with a revolver- again, he's going to have to reload soon. When the guy on the fence passes out- which he surely will- it's going to take two men to get him back to the car. Through all the zombies Glenn didn't drop.

When Rick ran away from the others to help that man you're right: that was stupid.

Hershel TRULY realizes his back is against the wall now. Hershel seems like a jack of all trades kinda guy especially in his heyday. Sure he like all human beings have a vice, his was liquor. But he became a family man and found religion and stopped drinking. However, one previous failed marriage (his 1st wife let him for another woman) and now his 2nd wife and stepson become casualties of a cruel ZA. I think him at the bar symbolizes that he now understands that life has dealt him so bad cards but him drinking makes him keen on its now survival of the fittest. Also liquid courage made his nerves more settled/numb as opposed to him sober and panicked hence him handling the pistol when the 3 of them were "boxed in" inside the bar trying to escape more potential harm/danger.

I keep reading comments about him drinking and then shooting. Why is that an issue with some people? It was established that Hershel is a former alcoholic. His tolerance is probably through the roof. I imagine he had a small buzz through the whole ordeal.

Plus any buzz he may have had was probably gone when he realized what was happening with Dave and Tony.
