Once again, trying to think of things that we can analyze. Ok, so the farm is by itself but why doesn't have any defenses. The windows look fine and it doesn't seem that far from the highway. There was zombies in the church that wasn't too far and of course there was a mob of them on the highway. I know its a show...but hmmm.

Oh yeah and they have power, are they the only ones on the road. Does anyone know from the comics if they ever mentioned what road they lived on?

Not much info in the comic to glean about the farm Jakobi.
-It's a mile off highway 64 where the RV ran out of gas.
-The road runs right beside the house. Actually, there is a "T" intersection right in front of the house.
-There seems to be electricity as there is a lighted cieling light in at least one comic panel (could be an old fashioned kerosene light).
-There are at least two barns; one typical big red barn and one stable. There's one more smaller structure but we don't get a good look at it.
    -They have horses and cows.
    -They "live off the land".
-They have a small little wooden fence surrounding the property (the kind that is made more for decoration than functionability as animals and children can crawl right through it and deer could jump over it).
-Otis says that he and Patricia holed-up at the nearby Wiltshire Estates until it was over run (all the nearby people did, and died).
-Hershel says he scavenged blankets, kerosene and supplies from nearby neighbors homes whose occupants had all turned.

The farm has a windmill, right? They could rig it to produce electricity through wind power.

The farm's a mile off the highway, and the zombies don't have the brains (pardon the pun) to knock down the fence. If they cover the windows at night and use the lights sparingly, they'll be alright...at least for now.

In the show, we can assume he has a generator, and they were at least a mile or two from the road. And as for the road, remember that aside from the herd, there were no zombies on the road, and aside from the 2 that chased Sophia, they all just followed the road without wandering off into the woods. All that time in the woods, they've only found a handful of walkers. There was the hanging moron, the 2 chasing Sophia, the one they gutted, and the 'shut up' one - I think thats all of them, and that makes 5 zombies in 2 or 3 days, and none near the farm.

Regardless, I found it amusing that, in the dark of night with windows and porch lights lit up like an inferno in the blackest dark, no ghouls managed to find their way to that house. Especially when they just established that the damn zombies were attracted to the light of the flares. :)

Yeah, I would have built a huge pallisade wall around the damn farmhouse. Or at least the verandah.

We could also assume that there was a wire fence around the property as opposed to the fence around the homestead, but typically, farm fences are only about 4' high and a bunch of humans pushing against them, and would easily go over. The barbed wire is designed to keep animals away, but the geeks don't feel pain so that scratches that problem.

And yeah, fortifying the windows, or at least shrouding them would help.

Hershel didn't want any of those things. Like he said "we haven't got any trouble with those sick people. Even without wapons, so we don't use them here and I'd chance anything. This is my farm and we keep it save ourself"
