I don't believe he sacrificed himself. The walker was within inches of taking a lunge at Morgan when Eastman stepped in. I think he was going to stab the walker but didn't have enough space to maneuver and take a swing to it's head, so the moment as Eastman fell forward pushing Morgan out of the way, the walker lunged down and got his back. I gasped and my heart sunk at that scene

 

Just because you don't like something it's "lazy writing"? I agree with Dreet that he was trying to save Morgan, but in turn got too close to the walker.

 

For someone who practiced his martial art like he did, I was surprised he didn't use his stick to knock Morgan out of the way or push the Walker back without getting that close himself but when your first companion in a long time is about to get eaten, maybe you just rush in without thinking it through.

 

It's all part of the story and Morgan's character development. This whole "All life is precious" philosophy Morgan has adopted probably wouldn't have stuck if Eastman stayed alive. Eastman dying made a greater impact on Morgan and probably made him feel as if he had to carry on Eastman's legacy.

It's like how a lot of famous musicians, actors, writers are more iconic after they've died. People remember them and appreciate them more.

 

What really saddens me, is that we never got to know Master Eastman's first name.

 

Maybe it was just Eastman. I used to work with a woman who's name was Ravin. No first/last. Just Ravin. (Pronounced "Raven")

Suspension of disbelief my friend. Every episode someone pulls something or acts inexplicably dense to keep the story flowing along. There's no other way feasible way to construct certain deaths so... How else can you envision him get bit?

 

I find your lack of faith (and bold font) disturbing.

 

Now we know why Morgan rushed in to help Carter et. al. when the walkers came out of the woods and wanted to munch the road crew. "Thought you said you don't take chances".
