That's a pretty good assessment by Ronnie, although I would change one thing. It wasn't the infection/fever that killed Artie, it was the blood loss. If that is a bite, its not on his carotid artery, but its a large gash, and could still bleed out fairly quickly if its deep and penetrated past his musculature. Because if it was the infection that killed him, it should have taken longer, and Artie would have had time to leave the school.

One other possibility is that Artie killed the walker, and then called 911 to get help for both himself and the other teacher who was even more injured and could not walk. He got lucky and got through to 911, who claimed they'd send an ambulance which never arrived, and Artie, instead of leaving to treated himself, stayed behind with the injured teacher to be with him/her until help came. In the meantime he died himself.
