I did not get the rationale at all for the pilot to take a walk, off in the dark. If I recall correctly it was to see if anyone was tracking them. It seemed to me if that was their concern, then they should not have started a fire, nor camp in an open area. Walking out your own also adds no value to security. It actually creates a worse situation because you'll be making noise or could potentially get hurt. At a minimum it exposes you.
