You forgot the obvious possible connection: the freaks' baby being Lydia's. Maybe she'd prefer her kid to live a normal life without a tiny dead skin mask on its face... (?)

Was there a baby - or maybe a child - crying when she was in the bunker (serious question, because here, a short 5 days later, I can't remember)? I want to say there was some crying there. If so, hearing that baby cry could have just triggered her memory of the overall trauma of being in that bunker.

    And, if I'm mis-remembering, well, then - forget I mentioned it. :D

    Could be, could be...

All speculation for now I guess.

    Another possibility......

Also, I am glad to know that I am not in alone in having thought about a tiny dead skin mask. Because when we saw that baby held by redshirt freak my first thought was "hmmm wonder if the baby has to wear a mask also"

And how you get it to shut up in a zombie walk... This baby must already be a hell of a junkie.

Hmmmm perhaps those with very young children walk a safe distance or completely separate from the herd. I mean we have seen that the Whisperers "guide" (i.e. following Rosita; steering the walkers from following Daryl's firecrackers) the herd in the direction they wish to proceed so perhaps those with babies/young children travel ahead to a predetermined location

Dnae, this is deeply disturbing because you are right. God only know what Alpha makes them do with babies. Shudder.

Well we now know what happens to babies who aren't quiet in Alpha's world. This is probably why Lydia reacted so strongly to the baby crying loudly in Hilltop.
