Anger and angst maybe? It's not just sadness otherwise he would have stabbed him only once, at first he pushed him away, he didn't want to do it but then he destroyed his face, maybe he figured out what he did

I assumed Daryl was mad at Merle because he knew he'd gotten himself into this mess.

I think Rooker explained on TTD that it wasn't out of anger towards Merle but I can't really remember what he said. Anyway he was clearly upset that his brother was dead (who wouldn't be?) so I doubt how many times he stabs the walker (not Merle) is going to be his top priority.

Yeah it wasn't towards Merle. He was angry at the world basically.

Daryl's, like Carol, repeated stabbings was a cathartic way of releasing all the emotions towards someone they both cared and despised.

I don't think Daryl despised Merle at all.

I think Daryl was not angry at Merle. All the survivors have been put in an impossible situation, a situation none of them want but must endure. To continue surviving they all must do the impossible. He had a moment of not accepting the inevitable, but he came to his senses. His multiple stabbing was his way of exerting some pent up rage over what the world has become.

Not so much lashing out at Merle, but at the terrible reality of it all. That's how I interpreted it.

Yeah, he was mad that he lost his brother. MAYBE mad that Merle put himself in that situation where he would get harmed like that.

Anyone else think that when Daryl shot Dale in S2 and said "Sorry, brother" that it was kind of foreshadowing? Since I didn't know Merle's situation at the time (but assumed he was still alive) I kind of thought maybe Daryl would run into him later and end up ultimately having to kill him. I was kinda right? I guess?

I haven't read the comics so my conjecture was based completely on the show, but I thought they'd later run into Merle in charge of a band of like minded asshats who would welcome Daryl but want everyone else either dead or on breeding duty.

I believe Norman said that Daryl just hates his life.

I thought it was the frustration of past events, losing Merle, regaining Merle than losing him again too soon. Frustration and hurt over the situation they're in, at Merle's decision to take on the gov alone. Just a whole lot of hurt and anger, but i don't think it was directed at Merle personally.

I agree plus, that's what brings them together, they have so similar life experience.
