I liked how the episode just featured Rick, Shane, Randall, Lori, Maggie, Andrea and Beth. I know we've had similar episodes in season 3 when there was just Michonne, Andrea, Merle, The Governor, but I really liked how there was just 2 stories. I dunno, it just hadn't been done before. It's very interesting.

I just rewatched this episode but I'm not sure I like it better this way, It seemed so different considering there was no Herschel, Dale Carl, T-Dog, Daryl, Carol, Patricia, Jimmy or Glenn! that's lot of characters to be missing lol plus I didn't really like the suicide storyline it would have been cooler if the whole episode was Rick and Shane

Well I like the episode too because much of Shane in it and Beth, BUT I get every time very angry becauce of Rick's behaviour with Randall.
They did this episode style later in S3 but I did not like it.

This ep' was by Scott Gimple who is the showrunner for S4 and the lead writer for every Episode. Though apparently now Kirkman is doing 2 episodes himself which is good. Kirkman has in previous seasons written;

-1x04 "Vatos"

-2x13 "Beside The Dying Fire"

-3x08 "Made To Suffer"

All three featured heavy Comic moments and Kikrman has said he's writing the following Episodes;

-4x03 (Looks to be the Tyreese / Bob / Michonne / Daryl Episode)

-4x09 (Is supposedly a "Full Adaption")

If this Season Plays out the way we've been told it means the prison is done with after the midseason premiere which means 4x09 is likely to be either the Governor's end or Rick and Carl in that specific house / shack with Michonne after the prison. Scott Gimple also wrote;

-2x03 "Save The Last One" (The Shane / Otis Episode)

-2x07 "Pretty Much Dead Already" (Sophia and the barn Episode. Also Darabont's last Episode on the Show)

-2x10 "18 Miles Out" (The Episode subforum this thread is in)

-2x11 "Judge, Jury, Exocutioner" (Dale's final moments. Gimple was only a co-writer i think)

-3x06 "Hounded" (Michonne / Merle in the Woods. Also the Episode with the CB'Esque Phone Hallucination)

-3x12 "Clear" (The Episode where Morgan Returns and the first sign of Michonne's personality)

-3x15 "This Sorrowful Life" (Merle's Redemption Episode)

-3x16 "Welcome to the tombs" (He rewrote all of the torture chamber Scenes to give closure to a certain character's Story as the original finale was literally just being ripped apart onscreen with Tyreese and Sasha delivering the final blow)

You didn't like it because it had no Shane in it. Don't mistake me I understand why you like the character and miss him dearly and the same goes for me with Merle, Andrea, Dale and Lori. The only Episode with few characters that i didn't think was great was the one legendx66 mentioned (3x03 "Wecome To Woodbury"). I thought it was a great Episode but fell flat with certain Scenes like the Governor / Milton / Merle warehouse Scene. It was a good introduction to Woodbury but i just think certain Scenes could have been deleted and the Initial Andrea / Michonne / Governor Scene could have been cut in.

Now back to what i was saying; just because a character you loved is gone and they have an Episode similar to the one tyour specific character was in does not make the Episode bad. I actually have loved every Episode Gimple has done and i really do like his BrBa'esque style. I especially loved how he did 2x10 "18 Miles Out" and now that the head-editor from BrBa has migrated to TWD (This was confirmed on Talking Bad when the Editor mentioned they were working on TWD) hoepfully the episodes are a lot better.
