Wouldn't have guessed that song for #1. Not a bad song, mind you, but weaker, in my opinion, than After The Love Is Gone or September.

I'll guess Journey next, though Open Arms probably was #1.

I just looked it up. It's hard to believe, but Journey only had 2 top 5 hits, "Open Arms" made number 2.

    Want some hints?

    Problem is, this is me:

    It's Toto! Crap. (Africa)
Oh, it's Kiss! Crap. (Rock And Roll All Night)
I got it, it's The Commodores! Crap. (Three Times A Lady)

Basically, I'm writing answers but remembering the #1 too late and it's delete, delete, delete.

But I continue to refuse Google's aid.

One more. If no, a hint is appreciated. Electric Light Orchestra

    Nope on all.
    Hints:
You have to go back a little farther.
This group has earned the status that they are known a lot of times by just their initials.
Two of the members were brothers.

    Another shot in the dark...

Credence Clearwater Revival seems to fit all the criteria (CCR), though I could've sworn Lookin' Out My Backdoor hit #1. Or perhaps not; the memory is the first thing to go, as they say...

    Cool!

    Thinking cap time...

Of course, in pop music history, there have been many, many acts that have had multiple top ten songs...

Of those acts, quite a few only hit #1 one time only...

Fewer still (many, many fewer) had that #1 with the lead vocalist as someone other than the vocalist mainly associated with most, if not all, of the hits.

Please name the band and song of one such instance (I can think of two, though there are probably more).

Name two and you get a cookie.

Hint: both of my answers were 80's hits.

    Winner! You got one!

Drive by The Cars was the only #1 for the group (double-checking, it was on the Contemporary chart, but close enough for the theme of this puzzle). Benjamin Orr had lead vocal. Ric Ocasik was no doubt less than thrilled that it wasn't "his", but he did write the song, therefore got all the royalties for it, so I guess it all comes out in the wash.

Chicago, I believe, had Peter Cetera as vocalist on a #1 song (if not more) thus does not apply.

    Good for you @PepperAnn!

Your turn to lay one on us!

I'll keep my puzzle open in case anyone wants to hazard a guess on the second group/song. I've double checked; it was indeed a Hot 100 #1. Here's a new hint:

"Technically" this is a band, but if something walks like a duo, talks like a duo, and looks like a duo...it's probably a duo.

Nope. "Maneater" was Daryl Hall's vocal.
