Is it realistic that Negan is fixated on seeing his baseball bat as if it was a person? To us, sitting in our bean bag chairs and sipping Ovaltine from our naked lady coffee mugs [yeah, I've got all yur numbers. I know I'm not the only one] it would seem the answer is no. However, he's been in a cell for 18 months without even the comforts or interactions of a normal prisoner [time outside, card games with other prisoners, job assignments, etc]. And its pretty damn dark in there, even when the sun is shining bright outside [he gun git osteomalacia]Yeah, I think a person could start to fixate on crazy things after 18 months of that condition, so I'm cool with it.

It was creepy the way he was banging his head on the brick wall.

Also, do you think they really did leave Lucille out there? I swear they had it when they were visiting him at Alexandria right after the throat slashing in the finale.

Can we just take a moment to reflect on all the abuse poor Lucille has suffered?

    She's been shot by Rosita.
She was set afire by Rick.
And now she's in a field suffering from exposure to the elements.

It's really disturbing what TPTB have done to poor Lucille. :(

The whole Alliance should've ignored Rick's order and beat Negan to death. Rick did tell them repeatedly that "Only one man has to die". ;)

Is there a toilet inside Negan's cell? Or he has to be escorted to relieve himself every time? If so I find it hard to believe he hasn't been able to find a way to escape yet.

In the comics, Negan's cell has a bucket; Rick's the one who empties it out, which gives Negan some fleeting amusement.

It definitely caught me off guard - during the entire episode I knew he was trying to manipulate Michonne but I thought it was for other reasons. I wasn’t expecting that at allllll. It does make sense though...after all those months in the cell alone.

It's dumb. I know he is important to the story, but like Rick, without Carl, he serves no purpose.

Kill him off and let's move on with the story.

I'm far from defending Negan, in fact I'm of the camp that thinks Rick did the wrong thing, and he should have been executed. However, having said that, once you make the decision to go a more civilized route and keep him as a prisoner, you have to actually do it right. Keeping someone in a dark cell 24/7, with no time out, no company, not enough light to even read apparently, is not civilized. Rick should have either made the decision to kill Negan or do an appropriate incarceration where he has some rights. If this was really about civilization, Negan would have some sort of advocate that made sure minimal needs of a human being were met. A reasonable amount of light. A book. An hour a week where someone could visit him and just chat if they so chose to do so. Occasional trips out in the sun. Enough to raise him from the level of animal.

If they do go the route of Michonne being a lawyer, then I think they missed a beat here with having her going along with this type of incarceration [if indeed that is his situation. For all we know he DOES get things like that sometimes]. Like I said, I would have killed him, but you either have to kill him or do civilization correctly. Because if your goal is inhumanity, then you aren't respecting your own 'cause'.

Further, if you put someone in conditions that can't get much worse, there is no incentive for him to behave well. If you create a point system where he can earn a slightly better life, and then lose that better life if he misbehaves, you are making things easier for his caregivers as well. He starts with a book a month and 10 minutes outside per week, and through a point system he can earn up to a book a week and 30 minutes outside.

Banging his head is step 1 in Negan's plan to escape. He wants to be injured enough to be taken to the "hospital."

ooh that's crafty and it just might work IF they take him to the dispensary should he injure himself badly enough to require treatment. He's a big, strong guy. I could imagine him overpowering anyone who was treating him, even in his cell if they didn't close and lock the doors behind them when they went in.

We already know from some of his background reveals on the show, and especially in the comics, that Negan views that bat as either an embodiment of his late wife Lucille or was somehow sent to him by her spirit in his moment of need. He is truly and wholly fixated on it; it was his one lifeline when he was on the road before ever running into and taking over/forming the Saviors.

She has been there with him through essentially the entire zombie apocalypse, like Ol' Faithful. When anyone let him down, she didn't. When his life was threatened, she helped him defend himself.

I mean, yes, it's just a bat. But Negan was already unhinged enough by the fall of the world that he developed this object obsession with it. To him, it's not a weapon. It's literally the embodiment of his dead wife, who died the slow wasting death of cancer and for whom he feels some level of guilt over not being a great husband and/or cheating on her.

So, literally no surprise to me at all that on top of all of that - added to 18 months "in the hole" like that - that his obsession has grown and, at this point, the man just wants to know that she's somewhere safe and okay. To see her as visual evidence of said safe-keeping. Being told that she's missing, nobody gives a shit, and she's out there rotting in the elements sent him into an emotional panic and tailspin. Not at all surprising to me.

Negan has never been the poster child of mental and emotional stability, in the show or the comics. :) Boy's got issues by the numbers.

Compare, for example, the pocket watch that Herschel gave to Glenn that Maggie is still currently carrying around. Anyone gonna tell me if someone ****ed with that pocket watch, she wouldn't go wildcat on their ass? Why? Because it's a physical link to her dead husband and father. You don't mess with that sort of thing. You just... don't.

Gotta say that at the end of season 8 I was pretty much okay with however Negan's fate was to play out. Kill him, not kill him....I was pretty ambivalent

Fast forward to finding out about Andy leaving the show. With Andy leaving, the show is losing a huge presence. I am not simply talking about the character of Rick but also the vibe that Andy brought to the show itself. For me the only two people who can even come close to filling that void would be JDM and Danai.

Also, with Angela Kang steering this ship now it will be interesting to see what she has in store for Negan. The time in prison, the next time jump. I can see some version of Carl's vision playing out where Negan has time outside on a work release type program - implemented by Michonne. I think in the right hands it has the possibility of being an interesting journey for the character.
