Gimple spent S7 building Negan up as a sadistic yet charming warlord, and then in S8 Gimple flipped the script and Negan became a reasonable and reluctant warrior king.

Gimple underestimated the general audiences hatred of Negan; he killed Glenn (funny how nobody ever mentions Abraham) and Rick vowed repeatedly that he was going to kill Negan. The general audience wanted to see Negan die, and were pissed off (yet again) that Rick "saved him" instead.

 

Exactly. They twisted the character so much that I have no interest in seeing him develop. I just want to move on from the entire arc.

 

Maybe one of Negan's wives will bake a cake with a file inside it so he can cut through the cell's bars.

 

It really shouldn't be a surprise at all how Negan feels about Lucille.

We've been given many glimpses of Negans feelings in past episodes.

There's the scene in the Sanctuary where the guy brings Lucille to Negan and he starts talking to him asking him if he (I'm paraphrasing) ****ed the bat good. The guy is astonished and left without words and Negan says "Just kidding!" Just kidding?....really?

When Rick and Negan are fighting after the car chase and Rick picks up Lucille from the gerund Negan yells "Don't you touch her!"

Negan is quite pissed after Rosita shoots him and hits Lucille. Is he pissed that he was shot at or is he more pissed Lucille was actually hit?

Negan constantly personified Lucille in many scenes, specially the premiere where he kills Abraham & Glen.

I'm not really surprised by his jail cell reaction at all. I'm sure the 18 months of near solitary has exacerbated the situation

Wife Lucille was weak. Bat Lucille is strong. This has become a coping mechanism of some sort for him, I suppose.
