I'm thinking it was some prisoner's escape plan while the world was still normal.

 

I think at this point we are at approximately 17 or 18 months..

 

It is interesting how they showed Rick finding the gun in the yard, and later Herschel gave him the speech about how he must take his gun with him for protection.

 

I have not read the comics myself but according to the TV series, haven't three winters gone by?

 

It could of been a gun dropped from the Governors group, when they attacked the prison. The gun definitely showed how he feels about them now.

 

No, at the end of season 3 something like 10+ months have gone by. Now they said 6 or 7 more months...

 

I think it was dropped during the Governor's attack.

My problem with that scene is a 'gun guys'. He took the magazine out and tossed it into the wheelbarrow.
First off, It may of been salvageable. Tossing a weapon that may be useful = dumb.
Second, He never cleared the chamber. Tossing a possibly loaded weapon, when there is no REASON to, = VERY DUMB.

I too am very curious about the gun in the yard. Gimple on Talking Dead stated it has been 6-7 months since the season 3 finale. The gun could be too deep in the dirt for it to be the governors group, or maybe the rains covered it after 7 months?

I'm not sure, it's the one thing I really can't make a valid opinion on. I assumed the gun is just the beginning of what is under the dirt. I assumed rotting bodies are under the dirt but they wanted to just show a gun to not give it away. And maybe they are using well water and this is what is affecting people?

I'm not sure, I'm really interested if it means something, or if it was just a stand alone scene of Rick finding a gun for whatever reason your mind thinks, and thats it.

 

ok So here are two scenarios that play out in my head:

1) The gun was dropped by the governors group perhaps the group missed the gun, it was hidden in the long grass... and while they are cultivating the land and digging up dirt the gun gets accidentally buried in the process of digging up the land... does that sound a little far fetched?

if thats too far fetched ithen you must go with Ackhams Razor (the simplest answer is always the right answer) and that is they were low on guns and ammo just like food so why not try and grow some more?

Storytelling 101, a gun (weapon) shown must be used in some way not expected.

 

Someone dropped the during the battles of last season, and it got covered over in the intervening months.

 

1. A hidden gun, from pre-apocalyps. Maybe a immate bury it, to use it during a riot or prisonfight
