Why did the little walker girl pick up the doll right in the beginning of the pilot? What would motivate a walker to pick up a stuffed animal?

One of the walkers also knew to use a rock to break the glass of the department store entrance in "Guts". But they've still lost humanity.

I think the writers changed their mind's about how the walkers would act. That's why we haven't seen that sort of thing since 1.02

I was wondering about that walker too. I thought they weren't supposed to be able to "do" these things? Using that brick/rock was a small sign of intelligence. I was just assuming that maybe the walker died with that brick/rock in his hand and continued using it? But wouldn't death weaken the walker's grip?

Could be the person was using it to fight off a walker before being bit? I don't remember if the rock was already in it's hand during that scene or if it was picked up. I'm beginning to think these things are something they throw in to confuse us, LOL. I'm wondering myself.

I think it'll play more into affect soon enough. Walkers keep some of their past with them, or at least some of their brain.

Didn't that machete guy in the Cold Storage webisodes hold on to his machete too? I would think he would lose grip after death-before reanimation period. Does make you wonder.

i think Bassman's theory is by far the most likely. i've seen many indications that TWD zombies most closely follow the George Romero zombie rules.

It's more of a fact, really. Kirkman basically ripped off Romero's original trilogy. With the exception of Bub in Day, who was an anomaly, the walkers follow the rules set up in those first three films.

Probably the same reason why Morgan's wife kept returning to the same house, zombie programming.

It doesn't make sense though. In "When the Dead Come Knocking" Milton did that experiment and we saw that zombies don't remember any of their past memories.

It makes sense that they are weaker after they turn but we've also seen them tear apart bodies which i assume isnt super easy

So it follows that season 1 and season 3 contradict each other on this important continuity because of a change in narrative direction.

    This is my OPINION,
Some small percentage of walkers are smarter, more coordinated, faster, or stronger than the rest. Like 1 in a thousand.
Evidence, the little girl with the teddy bear and Morgans wife (turning the doorknob instead of just beating on the door)
The walker in Atlanta climbed the fence but the others didn't.
The walker and Dale. That takes some STRENGTH.
Why? Who knows. But the crew just happened to run into more of them in the first season.

I like the theory even though I think it just got retconned lol. As for Dale it doesn't need to be stronger for that. It had sharp nails and pretty much anyone could do that assuming they felt no pain or emotion.

I was almost hoping Walker Merle would use "little Merle" on Daryl but of course he didn't. He didn't realize it was part of his body anymore. Maybe if Merle had reanimated in season 1 he would, since the walkers were a little smarter then. I also think Amy remembered Andrea for a few seconds before realizing, "Oh! Food!!"

well in season 3 Milton has that theory that there's still a little bit of their former selves left in there. apart from that I guess it was just to set the scene so that the main character could shoot a little girl carrying a doll, albeit a dead little girl. also walkers in season 1 could climb and use rocks to break windows so maybe they were smart enough to collect dolls too idk.
