A book by SE Hinton that was made into a movie around 1981 or 1982. Quite the line up in the movie: Leif Garrett, C Thomas Howell, the Karate Kid kid, Emilo Estevez, Tom Cruise, Pat Swayzee, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe. C Thomas Howell was Pony Boy and I think Estevez was Soda Pop. **Edit Lowe was Soda Pop*** ***Diane Lane was also in the movie as was Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers***

I actually grew up in Falls Church, so only a short drive from Crystal City and DC (at least in the '70's and early '80's). Whenever I watch the show, I'm wondering, where are these empty towns and forests near Alexandria... ? Just about every inch of Northern Virginia is urban sprawl and it has eaten Loudoun over the last 20 years.

To further add oddity to WI, I would say most of WI is "pop," but Milwaukee and southeast along Lake Michigan use soda.

Milwaukee actually uses many dialect words different than most of the rest of the state, or Midwest.

In Pittsburgh, PA we called it "pop." I started calling it soda or just "Coke" once I moved to TX.

In Canada, and I call it Pop. On the rare occasion when I say "soda", I always get asked if I'm an American, lol.

I imagine in the vicinity of Altanta, where Coca-Cola was invented, every soft drink was referred to as some variety of coke. Maybe it's hometown pride... like a hundred years ago. Now in the age of mass produced marketing people have to know there's more than just coke. Or do they?

On a secondary note, for the sake of some sick psychological experiment, I have since my kids were born pronounced window as "win-durr" around them to see if they'd pick up on it. They didn't.

Just as long as they don't say "warsh," or "warshington."

For the first time in a long time, I am very happy to live in a deep blue part of the country.

I grew up with soda pop. But we called it soda for short.
Knew some kids that called it just pop- but that always sounded weird to me.
