I also rewatched the scene, and am ready to concede that the blood on the staff could/would/did come from the Wolf's face that was already bloody. I was busy looking at the stick before, and not the position/condition of the Wolf's face last viewing.

So, I retract my statement that because the staff was bloody, it meant the Wolf was dead. I still hope the Wolf is dead, but there is no conclusive proof to that fact.
