I don’tt believe they would need to ride around on horses.
They just want to seem cool.

(I can have a doctorate in math do these numbers... but this is what I’ve come up with, because it is the day before Thanksgiving and work is really boring and there is nothing to do and Ive been thinking about this for a while)

Let’s assume that only 5% of the US population is left.
That leaves 16,250,000 million people spread out across the US.

The (average) gas station would store about 18,000 gallons of gas under the station.
They would be able to figure out how to get that out via siphon or such.
Plus...all the cars on the roads, in garages, etc with a half tank in them.
Sooo.... lets assume they never leave a 20 mile area.
You’re gonna have (wild guess) probably 20 gas stations to access and probably 5,000 cars minimum with stuff in the tank.
    So.
Gas stations at LEAST have 300,000 gallons (cause lets assume the tanks aren’t full)
5000 cars with an average of 10 gallons in a tank == 50,000 more.
So, 350,000 gallons available (conservatively)... each gallon taking them (if crap cars) 10 miles a gallon.
That is over 3,500,000 gallons of gas in a 20-mile radius that is dominated by the Alexandria/Hilltop/Kingdom group.

    SO THERE.

Always been a pet peeve of mind on the show how gas and car batteries seem to work fine sitting idle for 3 years. Gas should have long expired and I was surprised they could still use it at all.

Dammit. I thought this was a thread about farts. I have a lot of insight on that topic.

Gasoline degrades lol. Any pre ZA gas is almost 10 years old now. The stuff exposed to air like in cans and the 5000 cars is subject to degredation due to oxygen, moisture, evaporation, etc. and would start going bad in 90 days, and perhaps totally useless in 1 to 2 years depending on conditions. This is why they were making biofuel a few episodes ago. The underground storage at gas station will still degrade, just slower, but after 10 years of no maintenance of those storage containers, the gas even in those tanks is most likely long since bad/lost as well.

After a decade its natural they would have largely switched over to the type of travel we see now in S9, with an occasional biofuel vehicle still working for other types of jobs, etc..

Only reason I still see Daryl using his simple dirtbike is probably due to it being a kick-start and using not a whole lot of the ethanol they could produce from their crops. But while corny, it would've also been cool seeing some steam-driven devices piddling around.

Kind of like that "somewhat SM Stirling Emberverse" inspired, "Revolution" from several years ago. They had steam powered buses and motorcycles in a few episodes.

Petrol does lose its power but will won't degrade to the point of not being able to provide energy. The problem is the tolerance of modern cars for lower quality fuel means they won't run well. Older car would be viable and could be tuned to run on lower octane strength fuel. Basic motorbikes would also be viable and easy to build and maintain for any small workshop.

I guess if they locate a well and refine it, there would be no problems. See Mad Max 2 for example.
