FTWD Episode 514 "Today and Tomorrow" Condensed Spoiler Summary

***This is a summary of the entire episode.***

Al has been interviewing Morgan about his wife and his son as they have traveling westward dropping off boxes. The episode starts with Morgan watching his interview on Al's camera as she is refilling their vehicle in a parking lot of a store. She goes to get Morgan, and when they get back to the truck, Al discovers a gas can is missing. They find the guy who stole it. He is attempting to fuel up a car. Just as they manage to calm the guy, a group of men on horseback appear in the distance. The man (Tom) is running from this group. So the three of them jump into a car and hide from the riders. Once they are gone, Morgan tells him it is going to be okay, that they want to help him. Tom looks at Morgan, "that's what they said."

Al interviews Tom to find out his story. Tom does not trust Al or Morgan, but eventually he explains that he is from a community -- a condo complex where he used to live. He was elected HOA president right before the outbreak and then became the defacto leader of the community after society collapsed. They were managing on their own at first. The complex had a good security system. They were using the pool to collect rain water and they had a garden on the roof. However, things began to deteriorate and that is when the group appeared. They blamed Tom for the collapse of the community, but Tom ran before they had a chance to kill him. However, Tom is now worried for his sister that he left behind. He is afraid they will try to kill her as well. He explains to Al and Morgan that the group that took over the condo complex doesn't care about today, they just kept talking about tomorrow and the future.. This sparks Al's interest and she needs to go check out the complex for herself and try to rescue Tom's sister Janis.

Morgan is very hesitant about Al's plan. He thinks she is being reckless and cares more about the story -- using Janis' rescue as a cover. Al insists that it is more than just about the story and she heads off to condo complex (Paradise Ridge) on her own. It is night time now. Al has a plan to use a walker to lure the gate attendant at Paradise Ridge to come out to kill it, leaving the gate open for Al to sneak in. However, just as she starts to lure a walker Morgan appears out of nowhere and kills it. Al is becoming frustrating with Morgan. They argue again about each other's motives. Morgan knows there is more to Al's interest in Paradise Ridge than just rescuing Janis, and Al knows that Morgan is hiding his true reason for leaving the caravan and joining her on the road. They eventually come to a truce and start to lure a new walker towards the gate of Paradise Ridge.

They manage to get a walker close enough to the entrance gate of Paradise Ridge. The gate keeper opens up the gate and walks out to kill the walker and then drag it back inside the compound. After the gate has opened, Al and Morgan sneak inside the compound behind the guy's back. They find a hiding spot near the horses just as the gates re-open and a tanker truck drives through. Al and Morgan recognize the tanker as one of their's from Tank Town. Morgan is now worried about the group and is afraid something happened to them. Morgan wants to confront them but Al (thinking that this group is related to Isabelle's group) is afraid that they will kill Morgan. This forces Al's hand and she vaguely explains that she ran across someone who might be working with these people and that is why she is so concerned. She thinks the person she met might be here. Morgan and Al agree to separate. Morgan is going to go look for Janis and then try to find out why this group has their truck while Al tries to find who she is looking for.

Morgan finds Janis' condo and slowly searches through it but doesn't find Janis. He steps out on the balcony of the condo that overlooks the pool/patio area and sees Al down there. Neither one of them have found what they are looking for yet. Then Morgan hears some walker sounds from inside the condo and Al sees some people leaving a condo across the pool from her. Morgan goes back into the condo to investigate while Al breaks into the condo where the men just left.

Al searches the condo and finds a white board that has a list of chores and inventory on it. Next to that is a large map with a few keys hanging from pushpins on the map. One of the keys is labeled "Paradise Ridge" and another key is labeled "Super Lanes." The map is very similar to the map that Logan was looking at back at the oil fields.

Morgan opens the door where he hears the walker banging. When he opens it, the walker bursts through the door and catches him off guard. He grapples with the walker and eventually pushes it out onto the balcony where it crashes through the railing and lands on the patio next to the pool. Morgan radios Al and tells her that they need to go ASAP. As Al is leaving, more men are walking through the courtyard forcing Al to hide herself behind some barrels. A walker crashes through the barrels to get to Al and the two of them plunge into the pool. Al struggles with the walker underwater and almost escapes before the walker pulls her back under. Morgan then jumps in and takes out the walker. They swim to the surface only to be greeted by Ginny and her guards.

They take them into the condo where Al just was. Ginny comes in and offers them some jam. She tells them that she knows all about them from the tapes they left. In fact, Ginny is impressed with their documentary as a way to help "spread the word." Morgan wants to know where Janis is. Ginny realizes that they had found Tom. Ginny tells her them that Janis left not long after Tom and apparently Janis took out whoever Ginny sent to kill her. That is the walker Morgan ran into inside the condo. Morgan wants to know what happened to their friends. Ginny tells them that they are okay (unless they consider Logan a friend). Al exclaims that they had no right to take the oil field from them. Ginny, becoming agitated, wants them to join her because she is doing the same thing that they are doing -- helping people. Morgan rejects her because they have no problems with killing people. Ginny dismisses his concerns with a folksy saying. Then she offers Morgan a chance to talk to a counselor -- someone who can help him work through his issues about his family. Apparently they have a counselor that travels between their communities and talks with people who need help. Al asks Ginny about helicopters. Ginny laughs at Al. How could Al ask her that question considering they just now obtained gasoline.

It is morning and Ginny walks them to the gate. She is sad that they won't join them. Al can't believe that Ginny is letting them go, with all their stuff including Al's tape. Ginny wants her to share the video of the community so people can see what Ginny's group is trying to do. Ginny is trying to build for the future. Morgan tells her that she is actually trying to hold on to the past. Ginny smiles condescendingly at Morgan and tells him that they'll just have to agree to disagree. She then whistles and two people emerge with Morgan and Al's gear. A third person arrives with a long shrouded object. Ginny offers it to Morgan. It is his staff. Ginny's group has a woodworker and he managed to graft a new length of wood onto the staff where Grace had broken it off. Morgan thanks her for the repaired staff and they walk through the gate and immediately have a chance to test it on a couple of walkers. The staff holds up. Ginny calls out after them to tell them that they will always be welcome at her communities if they ever change their mind. Morgan and Al turn their backs to her and head off. Ginny is visibly annoyed that they refused her offer.

Morgan and Al are in the truck, heading to the rendezvous. Tom is in the back seat and he is very apologetic. They risked their lives to try to rescue his sister who wasn't even there. Morgan and Al tell him that they wanted to help them, and that is what they did. Besides they needed to check out that community anyways and they have no regrets about how it turned out.

They stop to refuel the car, and Al starts taping Morgan again, trying to pick up where they last left off in his conversation about his family. Except this time Morgan turns the table and asks Al about the person she was looking for back at the condo. Al reluctantly tells Morgan that yes she cares about the woman she was looking for and cares about the organization she is with and what they are trying to accomplish. Al was hoping that Ginny's group was a part of that organization, but Al knows that isn't the case now. She then turns it back to Morgan and Morgan admits that Ginny's group isn't the only one trying to hold on to the past. Morgan is done with the interviews now. They have served their purpose. He is ready to move on, and he grabs a radio and calls out for Grace telling her that they need to talk.

[Meanwhile -- while Al and Morgan were dealing with Tom, Paradise Ridge, and GInny's group.]

Grace is listening to the audio book of Don Quixote while working on the roof of a building trying to disassemble solar panels. Daniel is in the parking lot below throwing rocks up on the roof to get her attention. She sees the rocks and walks over to the edge of the roof. Daniel wants her to take a break. He found a case of Fanta. Grace is too focused on trying to scavenge these solar panels because they will be useful once they find a home. Daniel gives up trying to convince her to come down so he takes off to find a record store. After he leaves Grace gets a call over the radio.

When Daniel returns, Grace is back on the ground by the truck to greet him. She informs him that she just got an update from the convoy. The oil fields have been taken from the group and they are supposed to meet up with everyone at the rendezvous.

It is night time and Grace and Daniel are in their truck heading to the rendezvous when the truck suddenly breaks down. Daniel thinks the transmission went out because they were hauling too much stuff. Grace blames herself because she is trying to scavenge everything possible. She used to not be like this. She used to be realistic and would have realized they had too much stuff. But she let her new found optimism about the future get the best of her. Daniel tells her not to blame herself. You never know what is going to happen. He too used to be a realist. This time last year he would have never thought he would be a part of a group trying to help people. And now here is he with Grace and a cat with behavioral problems. Grace looks at a map and sees a place within walking distance where they can stay there for the night and then come back in the morning. So Daniel grabs Skidmark and his records, and they head off down the road.

They are getting closer to the bar that Grace saw on the map. Daniel is relieved because it is dinner time for Skidmark. He and Grace have a short conversation about Skidmark and what he means to Daniel before they are interrupted by a couple of walkers that appear on the road. Unfortunately, a couple of walkers turns into a small herd. They start to get overwhelmed, and Daniel loses his records as they grab Skidmark and run down the road to escape the herd.

It is morning time in the bar and Grace is waking up Daniel with "breakfast" she found. Daniel is still bummed about losing his records. He really wanted to share the Traveling Wilbury's with Charlie. He then tells Grace that if anything should happen to him, he would like her to look after Charlie and Skidmark for him. Grace jokes that she would have to then find someone else. It seems like the old pessimistic Grace has returned. She explains to Daniel that whatever she tries to do she always manages to do the wrong thing. Like with Morgan. She wanted to help him and thought she was helping him. Daniel tells her that she helped him more than she realizes and explains how he found Morgan with a big grin on his face back in the mall. This makes Grace feel a little better. To change the topic she gets up and grabs a guitar sitting on a small stage at the front of the bar. She tells Daniel she had been taking lessons, and they might not have the records anymore, but maybe she could figure out how to play a Traveling Wilburys song for Charlie to hear. She strums a familiar tune on the guitar and then starts to sing "End of the Line." Daniel then joins in for a few lines.

Daniel and Grace hear Morgan's call over the radio and Daniel responds. He tells Morgan that they stayed in a bar overnight and were getting ready to leave when Grace suddenly became quite ill. Grace is on a couch and looks very weak and sickly. She tries to sit up and talk to Morgan. Morgan wants to come to her, but he doesn't know where they are. Grace is clearly out of it. She tells Morgan she thinks she has the cancer that she has been worried about all this time. Daniel takes the radio back and gives Morgan the exact location. Grace gets the radio back and tells Morgan that she needs to see his smile again. She tells him there isn't much time left. Daniel then takes a blanket and tucks her in on the couch.
