So this is my first COD, and actually my first game since N64... It was a painful start (.2 K/D through my first prestige and .4 through my second, now up to about .9). I've got diamonds on the shotguns and just finished the SMGs, but they are pretty much all I've used. Over the weekend I tried to run some ARs, and I felt like I was running in the mud. I obviously need to adjust my playstyle to match the different abilities of the weapon class, but I'm not sure where to start. For months I've been running around the maps like a madman seeking out CQ encounters, and now I seem to need to dial it back a notch. I assume the class setups that will help me are somewhat different as well. Any tips you might have would be very much appreciated.

Use the stock on any AR and it will feel much nicer, especially making a transition from smg movement.

If you want your assault rifles to feel like an smg go with lighweight dexterity, stock and QuickDraw. This is a bit over kill when you get used to the assault rifles but it should help in for now with the.stuck in the mud feeling.

Silencer and ghost work well on the ARs also.

My tips for guns for you

scar h- 3 hit kill from any distance.
An 94- also night dropping power but a bit more flexable.
Type 25 - most smg like Ar.
Mtar. Alround great gun (much.better than m27 imo)

agreed with everything that he said cept bout the mtar vs m27.. I use both diff is i got 4k kills with my mtar and 13k with my M27.

I was gonna say also if you like being overkill me & my friends when we play HC TDM.. on raid and what not we roll out with a HAMR LMG. with target finder/extended mag/rapid fire.

that thing spits and just.. kills everything in sight.

Successful AR play is definitely a change in style, if you want to be more defensive. The two biggest things to get used to are less sprinting and more aiming down sight (as was said, stock is crucial)

With smg youve been running into areas, but with an ar think about your job as watching those encounter areas. As an example if im playing kc on raid and spawn in "a", I would run towards the "b" area and into/behind the pit. From there I can keep an eye on the red room and the middle area. You want to be switching your focus between a few of the areas that yous normally rush into with an smg.

Also always consider where your team and the enmy team will be spawning. If your team is spawning on one side of a map, see where your live teammates are, which spawn areas would thus be left for the enemies to spawn, and keep an eye on the exits from those areas.

You still want to stay mobile with an ar, you just want to be watching numerous areas, rather than charging into them.

Welcome back to the wonderful world of gaming. Being gone so long must make getting accustomed to things again very hard. Skipped pretty much all of the original ps and Xbox era. Played a little ps2 but not much. I can definitely relate.
Looks like your kd is rising pretty quickly though. You are getting it back quick!

I think it is a very good thing you are pulling out an AR as it will force you to think more about your routes and engagements. Others have made good suggestions above, but I think they are more along the lines of making the AR feel like an smg. My advice to you would be to do the exact opposite. Don't use lightweight and don't use the stock at first. Make yourself learn to play based on the gun. I promise you will uncover tactics and ways to play that may have never crossed your mind. In the end you will be a much better player for it. The only two things I would say you need as a necessity in an AR class are toughness and dexterity. In long range gunfights flinch is much worse and dexterity will help you while you in the smg rushing around phase early on.

I don't disagree with the above... but use stock... seriously... save yourself the hassle...

I got diamond ARs and I never discovered the stock till after I got diamonds... my buddy was like... dude... you need a stock on the AR...

It's such a night and day difference (after getting about 10k kills with ARs and no stock) that it actually took me like an hour to get use to the stock...

    It's BRILLIANT...

Mind you... now I'm completely dependent on the stock on ARs lol...

But most my movements include strafing... so you feel it all the time.. it's not sluggish...

I don't use lightweight or dexterity though... stock is the only must imo for ARs... quickdraw is nice too... but I'd rather have a reflex fast mag or suppressor...

And personally - the type25 is my favorite gun... low recoil, high fire rate, and it FEELS like a 2 hit kill in core...

This unfortunately so true. I feel way less powerful without stock. Especiallly on the automatics, all you do is ads around corners and strafe fire. On burst and single shot weapons I try to run quickdraw or neither. I find that if I move less im more precise.

    pretty much this^

    but not this^ haha

basically the only time you should drop the above attachments and perks while using a AR is when you're working on your camos, and in that case you should drop all of them to get cherry blossom and art of war at the same time. the reason i say this is because more than likely half the people on the other team will be playing with smgs, and ARs have a hard enough time winning close encounters against smgs WITH these perks and attachments.

Thanks to all who responded for the good advice. +rep for you all. I'm really enjoying the Type 25. Quickdraw and stock on it are awesome. I'm playing pretty well with it (positive K/D through my first 400 kills). Funny thing is that I can't buy a headshot with it (only 21 so far). I don't know if it's the low recoil, maybe... I mean, I hated trying for headshots with the SMG's, too, but at this rate it's going to take me forever to get 100 with this gun. I was getting a few more using the EOTech last night, but that feels like a waste of an attachment because I like the irons, but the headshots have been tough to come by. Again, I really appreciate that I got so many responses to this question and the advice has been very helpful.

You may find a combo of laser and acog is usefull in that case. Its doable with the type 25 due to the high rof. The laser for short range to hip fire and acog for distance headshots. Plus it looks really badass in tiger blue.

I wouldn't do it with any other AR.

I tried the ACOG for a few games before I unlocked the EOTech, and it felt very foreign to me. I'll go back to it once I get a better feel for setting up longer range engagements, but SMG habits are hard to break when they're all you've ever known. And I very much agree with XSlor's description of the Type 25 as an SMG on drugs.

Although your class setup is not as important as your play-style, it is still a major factor.

Assault Guns - If you can handle recoil, the SCAR-H and AN-94 are very strong guns. The fore-grip doesn't reduce the recoil much so not worth using IMO. Someone made a thread on equipping just the grenade launcher on the SCAR-H and it greatly reduces the recoil. I mainly use the AN-94 and equip only the stock so I can use C4 as well (I use Perk 1 and 3 Greeds). But if you prefer 2 attachments, fast mags/extended mags and FMJ are good choices. If you like guns with less recoil, then you can't go wrong with the Type-25 (Fast fire rate, CQ assault gun) and M27. They may take more shots to kill but more manageable. If you prefer burst-fire guns, then the M8A1 is probably the best option.

    SMGs
    - Honestly they are all extremely good. Since the strafe speed is practically equal to an assault gun with stock, I don't put a stock on my SMGs. I use extended mags on all of them except the PDW-57 (which I use fast mags on lol). The Skorpion-Evo is the best for very CQ fights as it has the fastest fire rate out of all guns in the game and the MSMC probably has the best range out've the SMGs. I feel the Vector is the best all-around SMG because it has a fast fire rate and practically no recoil making it deadly up close and can still pick people off at a distance.

LMGs, Shotguns, and Snipers I do not use much but some popular choices are the LSAT, R870-MCS, and the DSR-50.

For Perks you can't go wrong with Flak Jacket and Tactical Mask, two awesome perks, self explanatory. I also use Scavenger, Hardline, and Dexterity - shoot faster after running, not aim faster, even though that is what the description says. Many people use Perk 2 - Toughness and I did too for my first...6 prestiges. I came to realize that if I am flinching a lot, that means I am about to die and I would rather not have to start fresh on working for my score-streaks just to chance getting the kill. I try my best to get out of and avoid these situations if possible and kill people from safer positions. If you can't avoid a gun fight, you can still kill people when you flinch, you'd be surprised. Try to strafe a lot and even jump when shooting rather then just standing there going shot-for-shot. Anyway, if you are a smart player then you will survive more then 30 seconds and may even get a decent amount of kills, which means you will go through more ammo. So use scavenger and you can take those extra shots through the wall and not have to worry about searching for a gun on the ground behind enemy lines while holding just your combat knife. Picking up C4 (or any lethal/tactical) is huge as well.

I can pretty much use my class on any game-mode or map and do well. I usually start off a game with an SMG like the Vector or MSMC and switch to the AN-94 only if the people I am playing are not rushing too hard. I did make some very different class setups for Search and Destroy however.

Pick score-streaks that you can actually achieve at least once a game. I use the Sentry Gun, Stealth Chopper, and Escort Drone. One I get the sentry gun, I flank people that try to avoid it by taking another route. After a few kills I will have my stealth chopper and I play very carefully and just sit back and let my sentry gun and stealth chopper unlock the escort drone for me. As soon as I get the escort drone I rush and overwhelm the enemy team with 2 choppers at the same time. I don't get choppers every game but usually get a sentry gun. Sometimes my method fails and its very aggravating and I wish I just used lightning strike and care package...but when it does work, its awesome.

On certain game modes I use a different method. Headquarters for example, people are rushing like crazy and throwing nades everywhere that even flak jacket can't save you. On top of that, if your team captures the headquarters, they always seem to die off moments later and I find myself fighting the whole enemy team defending one small area, making it harder for me to get higher score-streaks. So I use hunter-killer, hellstorm missile, and lightning strike. Once you have them all ready to go, press the down arrow twice and throw your hunter-killer. As soon as you get a kill use your lightning strike. Wait a few seconds and use your hellstorm missile as most likely everyone you just killed will be spawning in the same area and you can get them all again. This works better on open maps, like standoff. I find it hard to do this on express and a few others.

My favourite assault rifle is the M8A1. I have only used it in league play though, I always forget to spend a perm unlock token on it and use it on something stupid instead.
When I used the type 25, it seemed very powerful but I just disliked it. I do not like it sights.

I think you have a good understanding of the game, reset your stats and see what your K/D does now. If you started off with a .2 K/D and worked your way up to a .9 K/D I think you probably have a 1.4+ K/D since you are used to the game now. And yeah take their advice for the stock on assault weapons. Also, before you reset your stats run around the map and get used to higher sensitivity. I play on like 10-12 depending on how I'm doing that day (sometimes I switch it because I get pissed) but higher sensitivity definitely helps, especially because someone on sensitivity 4 with a stock is like playing on sensitivity 8, hard to explain, but I am sure someone here knows what I mean, so if you play with a sensitivity higher than 8 or so, you will notice you are doing a lot better than if you play with a low sensitivity. Thats my $.02

I can't do the reset. I've put way too much work into the camos. Diamonds on shotties and SMGs so far. I know that's not much, but it's a lot for a player of my skill level. It would be nice to see the higher K/D and SPM, but I can live without that. My goal at the moment is to get my overall K/D up to 1. As for the sensitivity, I have worked my way up to 10, but sometimes I have days where I can't seem to control my aim and I dial it back to 8. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who does that. I think my next step will be to start playing more different game modes. I liked KC early on, but when I first started I had a lot of games where I would go 2-20 or something and I got a lot of hateful talk and messages from teammates. I started playing FFA because of that, and I really came to like it. It's pretty much all I've played since. Now that I have a chance to help, or at least not hurt a team, I think I'm going to give it a go.
