there's already another thread on this but day by day armageddon books I think are just fantastic

Also I doubt anyone would be disappointed in

    Dead City by Joe Mckinney
    Rise Again by ben Tripp

Dead City hits at a pace that you would have it done in a couple of nights. Great story... go for that one after the day by days..

I really enjoyed Day Z and the way it was written. Not sure I hold out much hope of the film being any good...

I am currently reading this series called "The Enemy". It's not zombies, more like 28 weeks later, whatever, and surprisingly enough its a young adult series. I hope noone lets that sway them though, because the books are surprisingly awesome. They are written by Charlie Higson. The books are set in London. Basically, everyone over 14 years of age has gotten this really disgusting disease that turns them into boil covered, melting, oozing crazed cannibals. The only thing that makes the fifteen year olds and up feel better is eating the flesh of the kids that haven't gotten the disease. I warn you right now, don't eat while you read these books. For young adult, they are surprisingly gory. Also, don't get attached to anyone. He kills people off worse than the WD comics. You think the main hero is safe..oh ...rip, splat, spash of gore.. WTF? never mind... kids dead. Doesn't matter because you know what...like any good sick parent, I know there's more. hehehehehehe friggin good books. The first one is called The Enemy. There are three readily available right now, a fourth that is out but for some freaking ridiculous reason is not available on my nook (whatever I am buying it in hard back). There are supposed to be 7 total. But like I said...don't get attached. People die. Grossly. Like being smothered in the folds of some fat old gamer guys body...YICKING SICKING man. Chef Boyardee Ravioli used to be one of my secret vices...but I think I lost it forever right then.

Do you like medieval stories? Might I suggest The Scourge? Three knights making their way across zombie-infested England. Action, dark humor and quirky characters. Has gotten great ratings so far.

There's a web site for stories posted by what seem to be amateurs that are amazingly creative. its www.talesofworldwarz.com. So far, none of the ones I've read were about taking back the world. Most are fictional stories of individual survivors and some of them are really terrific. [I'm not associated with the site; wish I had the talent]

I posted this under the broader thread, but want to give it another shout-out: "Raising Stony Mayhall," by Daryl Gregory.
I will openly acknowledge that I know Gregory, whom some of you might know from "Pandemonium," "The Devil's Alphabet," and "Afterparty." I was fortunate enough to get an advance read of "Stony" and this story, more than any other, turned me onto the symbolism of zombie stories, and the lessons behind them. If you like stories of graphic dismemberment and women in peril who need men to save them, this isn't for you. There's danger, and there are deaths. But none of it feels like the author saying, "Look how evocatively I can capture the screams of the damned!" The thing I love about all of his books is that they take surreal or future scenarios and make them feel immediate and relatable. Long story short: a woman and her daughters, shortly after the zombie outbreak of the 60's, are returning home when they spot a lone woman dead in a ditch. A quick look at his ashen face tells them he's dead...until he breathes. And thus begins an incredible journey that ultimately, inevitably leads him full circle. The 2 themes that resonated so strongly with me were (a) what does it mean to be alive; and (b) what constitutes family? The big bonus for me--as someone who doesn't necessarily "do sci-fi," is that Gregory's characters are so damn real, and his writing is just bone dry in its humor. If you're strongly interested in the story, go to Amazon and check out the reviews. He's won some impressive awards on each of his books.

    Basically any Jonathan Maberry books.

    Rot & Ruin
    Dead of Night
    Patient Zero

There is also a really good series by Mira Grant called "Newsflesh trilogy" which definitely puts a new spin on the zombie genre.
