Do you think his story about how his wife died was done as a sincere moment to "bond" with Rick and allow Rick to let his guard down, or some other type of manipulation? I get the feeling that Phillip was taking different approaches to test and manipulate Rick, but the story about his wife seemed to bother Rick because it mirrors Lori's death to a degree. Do you think Phillip was trying to relate to Rick, or was this story another attempt to mess up his mind?

I'm also ticked at Andrea for revealing all of this information to The Governor in the first place but eh.

While the Governor may have did it to disarm Rick, he did more damage than he thought he would, because it actually relates to the telephone scene with Rick in the first half of season 3. IMO, he unintentionally related to Rick, but his intent was to mess up his mind.

Both. Establishing common ground is covert persuasion technique (a form of manipulation). He then instills fear, by reminding him of potential losses before offering Rick a seemingly cure-all solution.

I didn't really think the governor was acting after they started drinkin and he got to know rick face to face. He knew he was an intelligent no bullshit type guy with the same agenda as far as keeping their groups safe. Well, minus the michonne vendetta. By the end there seemed to be an honest respect between them like leaders of opposing factors used to have in war. I think it was sincere, he knew rick had miss judged him and wanted to open his eyes to how similar they were so they could talk reasonably man to man before goin to war for nothing. It could have all been bullshit and he'll goto war no matter what but I'm hopin not.

It matches up with "Rise of the Governor", so, I'm good.

Just watched this one again. I'm still on the fence. Andrea obviously had loose lips, telling Philip about the love triangle between Rick, Shane and Lori. She probably also mentioned that Rick and Lori never got to reconcile before Andrea's death. Sounds like the Governor never got closure from his wife's sudden death too. When he saw Rick finally take a sip of whiskey after that part of the conversation, Philip gave him a look that said, "I got you now."

Seems more like a way of manipulation, especially since he tried other tactics first. When the early ones failed, he suddenly changed gears. "I've got whiskey!" LOL.
