Is the best "horror" book I've read. The visual imagery, Jack's descent into madness, King's writing style, just a great book.
The Shining is definitely a classic; one of Stephen King's great novels. King was inspired to write by an off-season stay at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Many years later, the Stanley was used as the Overlook Hotel in a 1997 TV movie of The Shining.
Does anyone read the old stuff? Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Mary Shelley's) Frankenstein. You have to use your imagination a lot more when reading the old stuff. Edgar Allan Poe??? The Fall of the House of Usher? The Tell-tale Heart?
The Shining, Salem's Lot and The Stand were so good it kind of ruined the whole genre for me for a long time.
Yes! Poe is in my Top 5 favorite authors. It's sad, but his work was so good because his life was in shambles. He poured out his feelings on paper. Each year around Halloween, I turn off my classroom lights, have my students close their eyes, and I read The Raven. They don't understand many of the "old" words, but they love the tone of the poem.
No kidding? I haven't been into King's recent stuff, seems like he's still writing but without the inspiration, but I'll DEFINITELY be looking this book up!
September 24th is the release date for Doctor Sleep. 11/22/63 is one of his newer books but was actually really good. I thought so anyway.
Yep, i'll pick up Dr. Sleep the day it comes out lol. I enjoyed 11/22/63, and Wind Through the Keyhole, and I just finished Joyland...
I pre-ordered it on my NOOK (because right now it is under $11 if you preorder), so there is a marker sitting on my home screen just waiting to be filled....
I think re-reading "the Shining" was a mistake...I don't want to revisit the character of Danny atm. I'll prolly read a couple of other books then get to the sequel. I'm worried that SK will mess it up. I like his older books better than newer ones. I know a lot of ppl liked "Under the Dome" but I was bored by it. I did like "Full Dark, No Stars" tho.
I haven't read a whole lot of Stephen King's books. Insomnia was one. It was alright. I started reading It a few years ago and still haven't finished it. The man can get a bit long-winded with his lengthy descriptions. I loved where the story was going but it was just entirely too wordy. I want to read The Shining but I'm afraid it will be the same way.
I love Stephen King's style of writing, and I've finished most of his books in three or four days. As for The Shining, it's one of his best novels, and I recommend you read it; it's better than Stanley Kubrick's film version.
Well I just started Dr. Sleep tonight. It's already promising just a few chapters in. I think I am going to like this book. Yay!
