More time passed between the pike scene and the satellite falling (188 days) than had passed between the prison flu and Rick capturing Negan (127 days).

I like playing around with the timeline to get some perspective.

Magna, Luke, Yumiko, Connie, and Kelly have been part of the group (199 days) almost as long as the group lived at the prison (204 days).

    I'm bored.

Lydia has been with the group for 192 days. That's longer than...

    Dale: 21 days

    Shane: 22 days

    Bob: 20 days

    Abe: 94 days

Seriously, Lydia has been with the group for almost 100 days longer than Abe was.

The numbers aren't that exact, but yes the essence of what you are saying is true. The first 8 seasons took place over slightly less than 2 years, and now in the blink of an eye we are covering fairly long time periods. I personally don't like long time jumps in fiction generally. But with this show we were overdue. I enjoy seeing older Judith.

Yea, the random jumps really mess with the timeline. It's like when people couldn't understand why Maggie was pregnant for so long, for us it was like 2 and a half seasons, but for them it was only a few months. Then we got a bunch of time jumps. 1.5 years between 816 and 901, then 6 months from 902 to when Rick was taken, then 6 years. We go from 3 seasons taking place over a few months to one season taking place over 8 years.

If only they didn't string out the Negan conflict that long! The one hardest to accept was the not showing the immediate aftermath of the Negan war, and then the 6 years jump! That was really far too long. With apparently no one dying, no major conflict (except the incident with the wild kid army that we learnt about in flashbacks). And much as I didn't need proof for Daryl's loyalty, but SIX YEARS of looking for Rick? Living on his own? And Carol living with Ezekiel happily for SIX YEARS then it just crumbled away like it did? Etc.

That time jump should have been so much shorter. And we could have had a few smaller ones scattered throughout the series. Part of us would always feel "robbed" of not knowing what went down during the time jumps and only getting some backstory in flashbacks, but surely regular smaller ones would have been better, I think.

Somehow the idea appears to be that it's only worth zooming in on what's going on with our people during major conflicts and disasters.

Thanks @Chr1s for compiling the timeline like this, it's interesting to consider how long the characters have "actually" been around.

May be the longer time jumps were intentionally planned for the Rick movies to fill in. But then the longer it bakes the longer people don't care. Kind of like how they tried to reboot the X-files after so many years.

The six years didn't bother me too much. I think if they had closed out 9A with the aftermath of Rick's departure and then did the time skip following the midseason break it would've been easier for the audience to adapt. It feels too abrupt and it made it much easier to quit the show at that point, which is what I did. I came back to it a couple of months ago and caught up on all the episodes, which I felt were very good in their own right. But I believe the transition could've been cushioned a lot better if they didn't jump into it in the next episode.

I see your point. Though I think the driving thought behind doing it the way they did, was to try to hold onto the viewers after Rick's exit with three very strong episodes. Hook them in, so they would come back after the three months' hiatus. I know a lot of people stopped watching after Ep5, like yourself, not ready to move on with the show without Rick. But those people who were curious how this could possibly work without Rick, I think were pleasantly surprised and indeed got hooked into the new story. I mean, they really pulled out the stops in Ep6 with Magna's Fabulous Five and the All Wonderful One And Only Judith Grimes, and the Whisperers. Great you decided to give the rest of S9 a chance, and fab you're still watching!!

Hey @Zedd @Tony Davis there is a thread in this subsection that we have been working on for maybe a couple years or more, called 'What About the @#&%$& Timeline?'. It seems to not be here now. Any idea where it is?
