So this is a movie about a gem dealer and gambling addict who buys what turns out to be a "pearl of great price" and pays the price for it in full. With that plot line and great critical reviews, it SOUNDS like something you should rush out and see, which unfortunately I did. As a summary, I wouldn't waste my time or money on it.

Sandler himself did a great job getting out of his usual comedic persona and becoming this shady New York jeweler and gambler. The movie is pretty much taking a man who has been robbing Peter to pay Paul for years, and now everything is catching up to him at once and falling apart. The movie is (I think) supposed to make you wonder if he can hold it all together until his ship comes in, or not.

The movie shows the chaotic nature of his life, and that's ALL it shows. About 1/4 of the way in you realize that there just isn't going to BE anything else. No sorrow, no joy, no grief, no anger... just hour after hour of chaos. It then becomes tedious, and my overall impression is that it was the LONGEST movie I've ever seen. Not good.

The only positive thing I can think of to say about the movie is that it seems like Sandler loved his children, but they, like everything else, took a back seat to the chaos of his life.

I can see why critics might have liked it. I'm sure some people would see it as a "non-stop gritty rollercoaster exposing the seamy underbelly of New York", or some such malarky, and would laud the use of what seemed like cheap porno movie music instead of a real musical score as somehow enhancing the overall immersive experience in to his life. Nope. I disagree. It was just pointless and bad.

You just started two movie threads about gems and Jewells.

Interesting how the subconscious mind works.

And not a single one about football. Amazing how the mind works.
