After Rick threw down the walker, he said it "got inside on its own" & "they always will". Is he finally remembering he did see them doing these things (like turning door knobs), are his bad detective skills showing again, or is he just plain psycho?

Well the damn thing got in because Father Gabriel left the gate open, and Rick did see that gate was open himself, but I think he's referring to that fact that someone had dropped their guard and left the gate open. He didn't know father dumbass had done it. He assumed it was one of the alexandrians just being irresponsible.

He said "There wasn't a guard on the gate, it was open" "I didn't bring it in." Then he said "on its own" as if it had opened the gate somehow. Not "someone left the gate open"

Poor choice of wording then. Walkers can't open doors or gates.

I think he just meant that a walker got in even though they are surrounded by a monitored wall. That it can and will happen the second you put your guard down, and that they were living with a false sense of security there.

Except Rick did see one turning a door knob after finding its own house again, another climb a fence, another use a rock to smash a window, another pick up a doll, etc. The characters never had any reason to think one couldn't do it again. They simply forgot.

The walkers changed between showrunners. You are speaking specifically of S1 walkers, under Frank Darabont.

Nah that whole thing was all Darabont and since he left the show, the walkers are no longer capable of such things.

If I would have read his OP all the way through before posting, I might not have been so nice ;)

Except the characters never mentioned that the walkers "magically changed" at any point. Not to get too off track, they also walked away from large fires like the barn instead of being attracted to them. The point is, there was no reason THESE CHARACTERS should disregard what they had previously seen. Unless this IS all just Rick's coma dream!

"On its own" doesn't mean that the walkers learned how to pick locks and disguise themselves as Jehovah's Witnesses. He just meant that the community is not invulnerable, and walkers can get in.
