Thank god we got rid of Carl. His trite teenage angst was counter productive, especially with all the others wallowing in their emotional conflicts or off on absurd tangents

 

Not Karl!!! He's been a survivor since Season 6! But at least the Most Recognizable Hilltopper got a name and a couple of lines before receieving the honor that is Simon's bullet, lol. Who's gonna take over the blacksmith now? Neil and the blacksmith are both gone! (the latter suffered an off-screen death, as the actor left the show after 8x01).

 

My stomach sank when he said “damn straight.” Every time a background character suddenly gets meaningful lines it’s a death sentence. He delivered the hell out of it though!

I had an inkling it was Alden all along! Subtitles showed his name as Alden last episode (or was it 8x06? Whenever the Saviors got thrown into the jail) but I wasn't sure and tried to find other sources.

Well I hate to be beating a probably dead horse...but in the comic it was our boy Carl who moved to the Hilltop and trained with the Blacksmith Earl and learned the trade. Dammit all to hell Gimple, now who's gonna be the blacksmith?!!?? You take everything away from us you bastard! Another reason Carl should've lived, we need those weapons as well as all the other things the blacksmith makes. *facepalms*
