What's with the upside-down flag in the RV?

I've always wondered why the US flag at the back of Dale's RV is hanging upside down. One could say that it's an old distress signal, although that's questionable considering it's not in prominent view. Is it desecration? Perhaps the message is that state and country no longer matters for the world has gone to hell.

Anyone have any ideas? The producers of the show would not have hung it like that without reason. Perhaps it's a subliminal message or a hint of some kind. Is the ZA the fault of the U.S. government?

    I wonder...

Likely as a distress signal. Other than that it was probably just put there as set decoration and not too much thought went into it.

You know Dale. I think it must seen like he hung it that way. Because the world is gone.

the flag displayed upside down is to signal distress. but that doesnt mean it was done on purpose in the show.

Because Dale is a Bleeding Liberal!

This is not meant to be any sort of hit against liberals, but if you've paid attention to Dale's character closely over several seasons, it's clear he is always for the easier softer way. Dale is an old hippie, non-violent, and plays the Devil's advocate against Rick and Shane's more focused survival attitude. So... When you put that all together, it's understandable why part of the decor of his home would include an upside down flag. In the world of the Walking Dead, so removed from our everyday rules of social civilization, the week like Dale die - its sad, but humanity will need to grow for several decades before a character like Dale will be able to survive. A good comparison to the Walking Dead are the Dark Ages - several hundred years just after the fall of the Roman Empire.
