The prison is a dead end. Just last week Glenn commented that they were running low on food and ammo. One side of the prison is breached and filled with zombies. The Governor is coming to try and annihilate them. WHAT IS THE POINT OF STAYING? Is this "the prison to end all prisons"? Surely there have to be other prisons all over the state. Some might not have been breached. It's been over a year since the spread of the virus. How long does it take for a zombie without a food supply to grow weak or decompose? Maybe another prison with weakened zombies would be easy to clear out.

But that's still a "stop-gap" plan. They need to find a place where they can really LIVE, and rebuild. They need to think about finding a way to an island somewhere. The zombies don't cross water, right? If they could get to a large lake, with an island in the middle, or to one of the barrier islands off the Carolina's they might be able to kill whatever zombies were there and have a safe haven for a good long time. Long enough to plant crops and rest up. They could then go out on supply runs at their leisure when it's most safe and stockpile a good supply of weapons and necessities.

They gotta try to start thinking "big picture" rather than just survive until tomorrow.

They are planning to grow crops in the prison yards; there's plenty of enclosed land to feed them all many times over, and it's surrounded by a protective fence with a stream right outside. Plus, they're there already, and moving is dangerous; and would be extremely challenging with a one-legged man and a baby on board... Really, their only conscious enemy in that area is Philip; if Philip were to die and the rest of the town became conscious, they would most likely cease being a threat. The reason Woodbury is so dangerous is because the population is blinkered and manipulated by a few people, which is made possible by their institutionalised hierarchical command structure. Those people were never forced to wake up, and so have remained the sheep they were before the apocalypse; waking up from a lifetime of indoctrination is difficult and with Philip stepping in to be their leader from the beginning they've not had a strong enough reason to change.

I would say flight and learn from what went wrong this time.

I know this will NEVER happen but:

#1 Find the others prisons. Probably your choice which one you take and stocked the same as the current one. Most people don't run to prisons for safety.
#2 You are better armed to take a prison compared to the last one.
#3 Start building the food source right away. Start fortifying, booby trapping, and prepare for an invasion from someone else. Cut off all but one exit into the prison. Drop trees, put cars in the way...
#4 Continue to hunt for ammo, supplies, and prepare for a long siege. Grow some food on the roof. Fish your ponds with trot lines.
#5 Add to the group * hitchhiker/kill when first threatened
#6 Use the towers to see who is coming in.
