Disagree, recognizing I'm in the minority. Neither would survive and Carl would die too if Shane hadn't done what he did, shocking as it was. Later, he's having a very hard time living with himself -- but even Rick tells him (Season 2) he would have done the same thing (I would have done ANYTHING). Here's the question -- if your child's life, or nephew's life, or someone's life you loved hung in the balance, would you have the courage to shoot OTIS like Shane did, and then to live with it?

Yes most people dont want to accept that or just dont want to see it -.-"
For episode 7, I just watched it once before so mybe I could be mistaken.
But didnt they throw this guy out and closed the door again?
Then they moved out behind so its a total changed circumstance!
Shane and Otis where on a lined street, they could see Shane all the time.

    Otis v Shane

Thinks about this: Otis not only shot Carl (accidentally), he also put Sophia in the barn. He had to have put her there before the afternoon of the day that Carl got shot -- meaning 1 1/2 days after she ran into the woods. For weeks, Ric and family are searching for Sophia after Carl is healed while later -- after Barnageddon (love that phrase; sorry, can't remember the brilliant poster who named it that, er, Hershel and his family deny any knowlege of this. How can this be? Otis put this beautiful little 12 year old walker into the barn and doesn't mention it to anybody?? I don't believe it and you have to wonder how Otis could have done that.

But back to Shane shooting Otis in order to survive and save Carl: if it was your child, your nephew, any other child you loved dearly -- would you take a chance that an overweight, out of shape, out of bullets guy-- would be able to escape and save your your beloved child and also save your best friend, the father, who is barely holding it together and will crash and burn if the child dies? Shooting Otis in order to escape and ensure the child lives --- shocking yes, but more importantly takes massive courage. Shocking, yes; takes courage, yes. That's why I think Shane was the most interesting, intriquing character-- especially as played by Bernthal -- in the whole TWD so far. The current season is great, but it hasn't presented these stark moral dilemmas that are developed through the Shane character.

Last season, I posted a theory that the morning after Sophia disappeared (she slept inside the house Daryl later discovered), she was bitten and died quickly; the fever/reanimation period might run quickly on children.

Walker Sophia stumbles into the swamps and gets stuck in the the mud. Otis comes along, checking for walkers, and places Sophia inside the barn. Otis, upset at the sight of a walker child, mutters to Hershel that he found nothing and is going on a hunt. Later on, Otis accidentally shoots Carl.

Carl is brought to the Greene farm, Otis, already guilt-ridden over Sophia, volunteers to help Shane get the medical supplies to save Carl. Shane sacrifices Otis to save himself. Nobody ever learns that Sophia is inside the barn.

They 100% knew she was in the farm.
There is one scene where you can see it. I would make a video but youtube always bann the video -.-"
Maybe I can mirror it. I try later today.

And I guess someone had to open the door for Otis.
Or did he do ALL by himself?!
Im pretty sure Otis would have told Patricia his wife that he found a little girl sick in the woods.

I think you're right. But even when he died someone else from the farm should have known about a little girl in the barn (Sophia). I don't think that he done all by himself, someone was with him IMO.

At the very least, Patricia could have known. We actually saw her feeding them...
