All the scars on Daryl's back are old except for the X that is in the same location as Michonne's. They were given to Daryl by his father.

 

I thought I saw two X's.

At first I was like nah those are his old scars. But the scar near that funky ass tattoo on his shoulder blade appears to be an X also

 

Yes, I think I saw two as well. Looking from behind, one is on upper right back (which is larger) and then 2nd one is on lower left (same place as Michonne's and is smaller).

 

It stands for aleXandria. Their community. They couldn't use "A" because the letter A has been beaten to death and turned and killed again through the head.

Tara, Jesus and Enid probably have the letter H somewhere on their body. Oceanside girls have the letter O around their belly buttons.

 

The X on the upper right back is old. The only thing new on his back is the X in the Michonne location. This is from S3, when Merle rips his shirt off.

 

Henry asks him how he got the scar, no answer. So I'm thinking they returned from somewhere with them at some point and it's not common knowledge.

I completely missed the X on Daryl's back. I thought it was just the scars from his childhood abuse. Well, derp.

 

The Xs are going to be fun to try to figure out.

At first I thought it was connected to whatever drove Michonne and Maggie apart. Then we saw Daryl with one and he was accepted into Hilltop with open arms. I also thought, at first, that Michonne's refusal to go to Hilltop was her decision. She didn't want to go there. But now I'm thinking she isn't welcome there. I thought Michonne was the protagonist in whatever situation took place now I'm thinking it's Maggie.
