Kevin Spacey Shaped His Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Character
In a Time video, Sledgehammer Games Co-Founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey talk about how Kevin Spacey was their first choice to play Jonathan Irons, the head of the out-of-control private military contractor Atlas who serves as the catalyst for events in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
That seems to have been a good call in more ways than one, because Spacey (House of Cards, The Usual Suspects) didn’t take the role less seriously for being in a video game. According to the creators he jumped in and helped shape and improve the character that was written for him.
“He added a depth and he added so much nuance and after a while he got into the character, right? He was starting to say, ‘Well I’m not sure he would talk about it this way,’ or ‘I would change this word,’ or whatever,” Schofield said.
As part of that process more background was added to Irons’ story for Spacey, down to the type of cigarettes Irons smokes.
“Having him come on and work with us has just really elevated the story,” Schofield said.
