Microtransactions? Gears Of War 4 Director Is For Them
The use of microtransactions in AAA games is a controversial move, not just among gamers but among some developers. Some abhor the evil practice while others embrace it. In-game purchases range from horse armor and meaningless cosmetic changes to booster items that will outright let the richer gamers cheat.
People won’t initially be happy to hear that Rod Fergusson, director of the upcoming Gears of War 4, is going to be allowing microtransactions in his game — but unlike some intrusive efforts, this one is the horse armor variety; entirely optional. He revealed this feature to Gamespot in a new interview. Within GoW4, players will be able to change the look of their characters by collecting certain cards. Fergusson plans to include a shop within the game that will allow the player to just buy the cards if he/she is too impatient to hunt them down.
Since they’re cards, Fergusson says this is intended to work much like card collecting in real life. “I like the idea of why you buy Magic: The Gathering booster pack,” he said. “If I could just buy the one card I want then I’m out, then you lose it, right?”
Fergusson wants to be clear that at no point in the game will you be pressured to buy the cards instead of find them. The option will simply be there. “We’re going to be balanced where you’re going to be constantly getting crates, or enough credits to get crates through the game, so it really is just about your choice.”
