Warner Bros. Nabs Five Nights At Freddy’s Movie Rights
Freddy Fazbear and his lovably lethal woodland friends have conquered PC gaming and are now headed to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Warner Bros. Studios has purchased the rights to make a movie based on the game series.
If somehow you don’t know what this is yet, Five Nights At Freddy’s is a horror survival game based inside a Chuck-E-Cheese knockoff. You are the night watchman and the creepy animatronic machines are….coming to life. Jump scares ensue. Three games have been released so far and the series has become a pop culture sensation among gamers.
Series creator Scott Cawthon will have personal involvement in the movie’s creation. “The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,” he said. The project already has producers: Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatSmith Productions, and two executive producers, Adam Stone and Jay Ireland. So what’s left? Oh yeah, the script, because there isn’t one.
An open call is now out for writers to make a compelling story from the game’s scenario. It’s early enough that the movie has no general release window, and plans could still fall apart, as is the norm in Hollywood.
It’s worth noting WB is also trying to make a Minecraft movie. I don’t envy the writer trying to untangle that one.
