No Release Date In Sight For Destiny 2
There was a time when Activision and Bungie were promising Destiny 2 would be out in September of 2016. It doesn’t look likely now.
Kotaku postulates that Bungie’s strategy for handling the Destiny franchise has gone through massive revisions as of late, and still continues to be revised. Recently the dev team has made comments about keeping the original game alive through free updates and microtransactions within, as opposed to the big expansions like The Taken King. That’s all well and good, but where’s the full-fledged sequel? It was promised in two years back in 2014, and some Bungie insiders made comments as late as last week that it could still be possible, but according to Kotaku’s sources, those people were unaware of recent developments and delays.
In 2012, Bungie’s release schedule template was leaked out. Back then, their original plan was to release a full Destiny game every two years, with a big expansion filling in the gaps during the years no sequel appeared. But this schedule also assumed the original Destiny would be out in 2013. It took another year to surface, and we can assume other revisions have happened to this schedule since then.
So why not let us in the loop? Kotaku says, “Fans often feel stymied by Bungie’s lack of communication, but Bungie doesn’t want to talk about the future because they don’t know exactly what it’ll look like. Fans are hungry for even the vaguest hint about new content, but Bungie’s leadership doesn’t want to hint at anything unless they’re sure they’ll actually be able to deliver it. It’s a tough situation for everyone, exacerbated by Bungie’s inefficient designer tools, Activision’s revenue demands, a high-pressure schedule, and a community constantly ravenous for the next big thing.”
In short: we’ll know more about Destiny 2 once Bungie figures out what a Destiny 2 is. Yup.
