Rumor: Call of Duty Publisher Setting Up Movie and TV Studio
So would you watch a Call of Duty movie or TV show? Probably, right? Your kids or your brothers and sisters would probably watch a Skylanders movie or TV show.
At least that’s what Activision BLizzard seems to be betting on if this latest rumor true. It says Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is currently scouting talent for a studio to develop the publisher’s properties for movies and TV.
On the one hand, that’s a bit of a no-brainer. Some Blizzard properties like Warcraft and World of Warcraft are already in development at studios. But Activision alone is without a doubt sitting on some of the most valuable intellectual property in the world, it’d be stupid not to look for ways to expand that.
I’m a bit skeptical of a Call of Duty movie, though, it sounds like something that could get out of hand and go very poorly. The movie-going public also exactly isn’t eating up war movies unless they have a serious and important message. Can Call of Duty have that gravitas? It’ll be an uphill battle simply because it’s based on a video game. Adapting one of the fantasy scenarios featuring aliens, zombies, or Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare might be a better bet.
