SDCC2013: The Walking Dead Comic Book 10th Anniversary Panel
The same audience member wanted to know what software Kirkman used to write and pleaded with him to not say he used Word or Pages. Kirkman responded by telling the man he worked in Pages and then converted to Word for the others he works with. The audience responded with laughter. Kirkman said he has no desire to learn new software.
The fifth person audience member wanted to learn more of Dale’s backstory through a one-shot story in The Walking Dead comic. Kirkman did not think the character needed to be followed up on. He wanted to tie in one-shots with events going on in current stories.
The next individual told Kirkman Glenn’s death really messed him up and wanted to know if Glenn’s death going to affect the upcoming battle. Kirkman told the man that Glen’s presence will be felt.
The following person wanted to know who Kirkman’s favorite character was. He told the audience member that he tries not to get too attached to anyone. He mentioned Tyreese and Axel as favorites and told everyone that his favorite rotates.
The eighth person up wanted to know how the creative process changes between the comic and the tv show. Kirkman said that the process is exciting because both mediums are different. He thought the writers on the show were better than him. He’s run into situations where a writer floats an idea and he’s thought it’s much better than what he originally came up with. He said it was a fun process to go back and do things differently. If it was the same as the comic again, he’d get bored.
The next guy up wanted to know if Kirkman had any tips on how to survive the Petco Park Zombie Run. He told the person to find the dead spots where he could rest. There are places where zombies won’t attack participants. He also recommended taking any water that was offered along the way.
Audience member number ten noted Carl’s evolution as a character. He wanted to know if there were any plans to bring in other children to serve as peers or rivals. Kirkman said there would be a larger cast if they survive the war. If Sophia’s still around, there will be stories involving her.
The following person up wanted to know if Walkers would evolve at all. Kirkman told the audience member that zombie evolution is a Romero trope that he tries to stay away from. The zombies will physically change and more will be discovered about them. The cast will learn more about how zombies work, but the walkers themselves will not evolve. They won’t learn to do things like learn to use weapons.
The next one up wanted to know if the tv show inspired or altered what he was planning for the comic. Kirkman told the individual that he doesn’t want the show to change what he does in the comics.
Lucky number 13 wanted to know how Negan’s tiger will distinguish between the good and bad guys. Kirkman thought it would be very difficult for it to do so and then said that the tiger would be a problem.
