SDCC2013: The Walking Dead Comic Book 10th Anniversary Panel
The twenty-first person up wanted to know if he had a preference for working in the television or comic format. You can do more with less on the show because you have the actors to give facial expressions. Still images in comics have to go further to communicate similar ideas. He loves having motion and sound as it opens things up. But, then there are things you can only do in the comics. There are benefits to both.
The next individual up wanted to know if there would be more evolution to Carl’s character and used abandoning Rick as an example. Kirkman kiddingly replied, “Yeah, he’s going to kill Rick.” He said he thought there are still placed for Carl to go. The character would continue to evolve. Rick would treat him differently, especially going into the war. He will be trusted more and more.
The following fan wanted to know how Kirkman pictured the sound of Negan’s voice and whether it was deep and gravely or high-pitched. Kirkman hadn’t thought about it previously, but imagined it as deep, but not as gravely as the audience member pictured.
The subsequent question asked if there were any plans to bring anyone from the comics to the television show or vice versa. Kirkman told the person that they could “possibly expect that,” but he didn’t want to spoil anything.
Attempting elicit a reaction leading to confirmation from Kirkman, the next audience member phrased the next question as a given. He wanted to know how Rick will react when he finds out Negan is working for Ezekiel. Kirkman laughed and then told him it would be a great twist, but that it would not be happening.
The following fan wanted to know if there will there be more webisodes for season 4. Kirkman said that he believed there would be, but to not quote him on it.
He also wanted to know if AMC was attempting to sabotage the show through the constant replacement of show runners. Kirkman jokingly replied, “Yes.” Then followed by telling the audience member that was not the case and then re-enforced that he thought that Gimple was going to do a great job.
The next person wanted to know if he had thought about introducing Daryl Dixon to the comic. He said he had thought about it, but decided against it. He believed it to be cool that there’s something special and unique to each medium in which people experience The Walking Dead. There are characters from the comic who won’t make it into the show. He wrapped up the question by saying, “You never know! …but it’s never going to happen!”
The subsequent individual wanted to know if Kirkman would ever show what was going on in the rest of the world. Kirkman said it had been mentioned in the show that something had gone on in France and that this was a worldwide phenomenon. But, he preferred to play it coy in the comics. He liked the mystery of it, but there could be a bigger picture story at some point.
